Last night my 95 n/t threw a cel. A little bit later on the way home it started making a loud squealing noise at idle and below 2400 rpms, above 240 rpms it runs fine. I get home and put the logger on it and the code is for the cam pos. sensor. So I pull the timming cover to find the belt is wearing badly on the inside (closest to head). On the outside the belt is very sharp and appears to be wearing as well. I also verified that the noise was from the belt area. The car idles and runs fine at any rpm including idle.

Any ideas? I know I must replace the timing belt now, but was wondering what might have caused the problem so I can get an idea on cost for parts.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

Squigs

What was the specific P code that the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT stored? A generic key dance code won't help me much.

The timing belt fraying, alone, typically won't cause a check engine light. It needs to be replaced NOW though. Then clear the codes and drive it again to see if it comes back.

I can't remember for sure, I think it was a 8 or 80? If that sounds right. I will go check again tommorow to be sure.

Is the belt procedure the same as a neon? I am very familiar with the dohc neon motors (had a 190 whp all motor one)?

Thanks for you help,

Squigs

Yeah, the neon was a DOHC (sohcs are for your feet:cool: )

I will go out and get the code.

P1390: Timing belt skipped one tooth or more. Replace the belt and your problems should be gone. Don't drive the car. If it's jumped one tooth, it can jump another and wipe out the valves, head, and maybe the pistons if they take a hard enough wack.

Yeah, it has been parked. Do you think that something let go (tensioner, idler pulley, water pump) to cause this? I just don't want it to happen again and fix evrything while it is apart.

Thanks,

Squig

I'd replace those two pulleys and the water pump if it's not been replaced already. Chances are it's age of the belt and possibly the pulleys as well. Have to tear in to it to find out everything it needs though.

Ok thanks. I will tear into it tommorow and post what I find.
