I just bought a 92' eclipse, a day later the trannys screwed. 2nd gear synchro is gone. Is there anyway the seller could have hid it? Stopped it from grinding into second? Thanks for any help

Sometimes after sitting, it will be ok. Then you drive for a bit, and it will just not go in to 2nd. It's nothing you can hide. How many miles on the tranny? What fluid is in it. The previous owner may have had a GL-5 type of oil in it. If so, it will eat the synchros.

If you want to get it rebuilt, consider www.teamrip.com or www.shepracing.com Both guys are good.

Several years ago I had a 90 Laser Turbo FWD that developed severe shifting problems. Someone suggested that I change the fluid and replace it with GM Synchromesh. I did this and the results were just amazing. It instantly began to shifting better than any DSM that I had ever driven. It was still perfect when I sold it, several years later.

I replaced the Laser with a 91 Talon AWD. The transmission in the Talon was not too bad but did not shift nearly as smoothly as the old Laser. Several years later, I had to replace the CV boots and while I was at it I decided to replace the transmission fluid with GM Synchromesh. In this case, improvement was minor. However, it has continued to shift rather easily.

So, before spending a low of money on a transmission rebuild, you might consider just changing the transmission fluid to GM Synchromesh. It might not completely solve your problem, as it did in my case, but it doesn't cost that much to find out.

Ah, but -yet again- instead of paying GM's price for it, and dealing with the ever-so-not-helpful counter jerks at GM, just buy Pennzoil (or Quaker State) Synchromesh: it's EXACTLY the same product (even has the GM part number on the jug) but sells for about 40% less. AutoZone has it on the shelves.

Dose your clutch pedal have play in it? Mine grinds second if its cold, because I need to have something welded to fix that pedal asm (Don't have time for it right now its to cold so I just put it in gear slowly and it works great) Maybe u have some problem maybe not?

Andy has a good point. Check your clutch adjustment. You can find out detailed directions at www.teamrip.com

Also, like I was saying before, it's always good to know what flid is in it. Change the fluid. The Synchromesh that Autozone sells is something like $5.99/qt. Well worth the $20 so you don't have to spend over $1000.

I put Redline synthetic tranny fluid in it. It didnt make the grinding any better. I played with all the linkage adjustments on the shifter and that didnt help eitiher. My guess is the synchro is toast. Im trying to find a used tranny to swap out.

Try all the mods first before you waste hundreds of dollars. When I bought my DSM I swore the trans was trash. I went out and spent less then 60 bucks for all the mods and it shifts WAY better now.
Mods:
(Roller blade Bearings) $2
(Washer Mod) Free
(Mobil 1 trans fluid) $30 (should have gotten Penzoil)
(Clutch Slave) $25
(Linkage adjustment) Free

What is the roller blade bearing? What is the washer mod? Thanks!!

the rollerblade bearing is exactly what it says it is, a rollerblade bearing, but where u put it is the key factor, you take out the old rubber bushing on the shifter link cable (at the end that connects to the linkage arm on the trans) u need two of them and its a tight fit but i did it on two cars....good stuff as far as the washers, on the shifter base inside the car, there are 4 bushings that are rubber, take them out and replace with washers i love the feel of it now, its a lot more crisp and feels less "gooey, or mushy" definitely worthe the 20-40 mins and the is pretty cost effective
