running hot, radiator fan issues

Hey gang,

My 97 Spyder GS-T seems to be running a tad hot. For whatever reason, after a couple of hard runs, I'll park it and wait to see if the fans come on. Well sure enough, 1 fan does come on, but not the other.

I replaced the ECT sensor, and that fixed the initial problem that the fan wasn't coming on at all.

But it seems like when it should be running both fans due to the temp, it runs the one, and I can't figure this out for the life of me.

I've changed the Hi Fan relays, swapped relays, etc..to no avail.

Both fans work, as I put on the A/C and they come on.

Can anyone give me the Idiots Guide to Testing Fan Problems?

I'm no mechanic, but I follow directions well and I am pretty good at DIY :)
 
The fan that comes on when your temp is up is your primary fan the other is for when you run your A/C and doesn't come on unless you are runnning your A/C.

I guess that would explain it.

So the fan itself has 2 speeds? I dunno, just doesn't seem to be getting the job done.
 
Let's try again: you have two fans. One is turned on when the engine coolant gets hot enough to trip the sensor in the gooseneck.

The other comes on when your air conditioning is turned on. Only when your air conditioning is turned on.

They each only have two speeds: On and Off.

If you feel you need more airflow, turn on the AC.

Are you _really_ running hot, or does the factory gauge just read hot? If that's the case, you may need a new temperature sender.

DSMs don't have much in the way of cooling issues unless there's a fault in the cooling system- and the most common of those is a worn radiator cap gasket.
 
I understand what your saying. One is dedicated for cooling, the other is dedicated for the A/C.

But what threw me off is this. If you look at the relays, there is a Hi Cooling Fan relay, and a Low Cooling Fan relay.

I assumed, Hi runs both fans, Lo runs just the one. Unless, the fans are variable speed, so Hi spins it faster, Lo not as fast.

you can get around your problem by hardwiring the relays for both fans i have mine wired so they both run all the time this is not great for warm up purposes but it will run alot better if you run hard

Actually, what would be better is rewiring so the a/c fan also kicks on with the temp fan, so that way your not running the fans all the time and putting excess wear on the fan motors?

Anyone wanna bring the science on this one? Should be as easy as splitting the temp fan relay leads over to the a/c fan relay, right?

Ahhhh HA! Finally I make a correct assumption. Now if I can just figure out what that middle pedal is for by my feet, I'll be ok.
