I have an 91 gst and the trans has always given me problems i replaced the tcu and it made it better than it was. It does not shift into overdrive and when I put od on it goes into nuetral. Also it shifts roughly sometimes and Ive never been able to get an acurate reading from the dipstick it always completly covers the dipstick.

How are you checking the tranny oil?

Ok as long as it's up to temp. I would find out about having a "service" where they will drain the oil, clean/change the filter and if possible adjust the bands. You should not let it misbehave nor force to misbehave. It is true overfilling an automatic can cause harm. It prevents spool valves from purging, same with the clutch pack pistons. What should have been a proper engagment becomes sluggish and allows the clutches to slip. Plus because of the delay it's still releasing from one gear and shifting into another at the same time. I don't know if this is the problem, just tossing ideas out which may fit the condition you are having. A tranny service could take an hour but sometimes places will have 1/2 price specials to get you in the shop in hopes you will buy something else. The service should do no harm, if they try to sell you something else be careful. You don't want to go in thinking you will have a $50-$75 bill and get stuck with a $500 bill and the tranny still the same. The car drove in there and it damn well better drive out. Become an informed consumer.
