My car has been jolting ALOT so i decided to check the TPS via the way shown on VFAQ

I put an ohm meter on it and noticed as i turned it through its range it the numbers would jump erraticly up and down or not regester at all..

is this a sign of a bad TPS?

yeaaa, were gonna need you to go ahead.. and move down to storage room B, that would be greeeeaat...

It sounds like it to me. When mine failed, it actually tested good during the resistance tests. I eventually hooked up test wiring between the sensor and the connector, so that I could observe the operating voltage being sent to the ECU, via a digital volt meter. I mounted the volt meter on the outside of the windshield, so that I could observe it during driving. Doing this, I noticed that every time the car bucked, the volt meter reading would go to zero. If you think that this the problem, I have an extra 2g TPS, off of a throttle body that I bought for the ISC servo that was on it. I can't use the throttle body or the TPS, since my car is a 1g.

well, A 1g TPS will work on a 2g (im using one now) so why wouldent a 2g one work on a 1g?

also if you notice when you buy a new TPS from most places they cover years 90 or 91-99, its the 4 pin one (2g) so apparently it should work fine on a 1g.. ??

The TPS on my 91 Talon has a 3 pin connector. The TSP on the throttle body from the 97 GST has a 4 pin connector. I think that the 90 TSP was different from either of these.

im using a 3 pin on my 2g, the connectors will clip on to either, if yours doesnet use the 3rd pin.. so what? 1 2g one will probably still work on it all the same I dont know what on the 2g uses the 3rd pin, mine drives exactly the same with either.. cruise works.. etc.. i cant tell anything not working as it should :thumb:

That's interesting and good to know. I assume that the 3 pins on the 1g are for the power, ground and voltage sent to the ECU. Perhaps the 3 equivalent pins on the 4 pin connector serve the same purpose. I wonder what the 4th pin on the 2g does? It would be nice to know what it is there for. Anyone know?

I talked to a guy at mitsu, and he said that now, if you buy a TPS for either a 1g or a 2g you get the "2g" one because aside from the additional pin there is no difference, so they just use the 2g on all cars now(when replacment is needed) he wasnt quite sure what the 3rd pin that is missing on the 1g and preasent on the 2g was for, but apparently either TPS will work with either model

I believe the 2G TPS incorporates the idle switch into the TPS, while it's a separate sensor on the 1G TB. So, I believe a 1G with a 2G TPS just won't connect to the idle switch wire at the harness, and a 2G with a 1G TPS will never tell the ECU that it's at idle, but the ECU probably knows from the voltage returned anyways.
