1990 eagle talon 135k well kept up on maintenance... awd... 5 speed no mods...

okay, i've looked through the threads posted, and i haven't seen anything exactly like this... i intend to talk to my step dad as well, since he's my super duper uber mechanic (35+ years exp) and can fix anything and diagnose anything... but this is what happened...

2 days ago, i get up for work, 6:45am, battery completely dead, no lights left on, nothing that i can possibly figure out to have drained the battery... suspecting the alternator :( so i get it jump started, drive it around about 20 minutes and then go to work, work 13 hours, and it starts right up, no problems, i could hear the alternator working to charge the battery... no squeals, no nothings...

on the way home, the thing is squealing like a mofo on any acceleration below 2g rpms... stupid car... i get it parked, nice and easy to get to in case i need to jump start it... and then i let it sit a whole day that way... i get into it today and start it, and it is squealing horrifically... so i quick open the hood, jump out, and look at it... don't notice any wobbles or smoke, and it stops squealing... AND the alternator belt stopped turning :( sigh... so i'm pretty sure the only way to fix this is to replace the alternator... but i'd like to hear if anyone has had similar problems... thanks

It happens - that's a helluva belt on there - Someone could have over tensioned it at some point - No telling how old it might be - At least you don't have to wonder if it's dead like some guys... It's DEAD.

Is the belt still on, all the way around? Sounds like you may have just burned the belt up due to tension. (lack there of)

the belt is perfectly fine, although i will inspect it when i get it off... the alternator is just not turning the pulley anymore :(

i was reading some information on power steering pumps, because mine has started leaking around the o-rings in the top... grrr... and it looks as if that may have hastened my alternator to its death... sigh...

bearings seized or seized stator/dyno assembly.

That P/S leak will kill your new Alt too - very common, the old O Rings will be brittle & cooked - Mitsu has a Seal Kit for it, that's the way to go - I did a P/S flush & went to Synthetic P/S Fluid while I was in there... Guys have killed there ECU's with bad Voltage Regulators traced back to P/S leaks.
