help with eternal dome lights

Ok, here is the problem. When I turn my car off and take the key out, there are no lights on at all. But when I open the door and close it as I look through the window I notice that the light around the ignition,the door open sign and the lights by my pedals are on. I tried to slam the door but the lights are still on. Do you guys have any ideas on how to fix this or what the problem is.

They're on a timer and dim over something like 10 seconds. So you can find stuff when you get in. The car tells you where to take your key and stick it.

No, what I mean is they will still be on when I get in the car the next day or whenever I get ready to leave again.

Did you or someone else adjust the panel dimmer switch of recent? Many cars will turn the interior lights on when you turn the dimmer switch to the far extreme (bright?)... can't tell you which way without being in the car but try it.

If you find it's at the extreme end just try a mid point setting. It may be that in the oppisite direction or yet another detent in the switch which will disable the lights altogether. Also some cars have an adjustable delay so the light decay can be set from 0 seconds to a couple of min. These things should be covered in an owners manual which unfortunately is not included in a repair manual.

If I understand your question this is not a function of the key switch but a function of the interior lights. The door switches activate the circuit but the control is usually associated with the instrument panel dimmer when set past the max bright instrument panel lights. Some place in all this is an on all the time position and an off all the time when the door is left open. As mentioned previously some cars will have a delay timer setting before it turns off.

Well, the lights are still on in the inside. Maybe, i'm not experienced enough to solve the problem so i'll just take it to a electrical shop. Thanx for the help anyways

Entirely possible though they made no complaint that the door wasn't closing properly. The other thing which caused me to rule this out was they made no mention that the seat belt(s) wern't moving. They may be on different door switches or ganged but at least one part of the circuit then would be grounded. They aslo didn't mention warning lights on the dash.

Yes/no on any of the above, you know more specifics than I do about these DSM ??

I finally got the lights to go out. There was a button above the the dimmer that I really never noticed. Anyway, I pushed that in and my lights now shut off. Thanx for the help guys
