Hey,
I have a 94 GS, NA, Manual Tran, 150,000k

The other week when i was driving down the highway it started poping out of 5th gear around 2.5-3k RPM. Usually when i had to slow down a little then accelerate. Now it does not want to go into reverse. Any ideas, suggections on what to check would be apreciated.

Thanks, Travis

I was going to say a bad thrust bearing allowing the shaft to move for and aft but that loose nut would have the same effect.

He could check shift cables to make sure those are properly adjusted.

Minor points in that article, putting a screwdriver anywhere on a gasket or machined mating faces is a big no-no!! Use a plastic hammer filled with lead shot and bang away. Use blocks of wood and a hammer on any ears/tabs on the casting. Don't scar those machined parts up, I have a name for them that does. Butcher!

Many transmissions can be shifted into 2 gears at the same time which will lock it so you can torque nuts. You can stick the wheel on with 2 nuts and jam a block of wood under the tire with it in gear so you can torque nuts. Those are just alternatives to what the author has written. Check for wear on that 5th(?) gear syncro while it's staring you right in the face.

Read my lips... _Do not_ pull that shift fork towards you without the syncro being held in place for the shifting hub slippers could pop out along with the springs. That will take you an hour getting them back in if you have never done the job before (that's if you find them). I'm not meaning to scare you, looks like pretty straight forward job and save $$$. If you use the 2 gear lock method don't forget to unlock before assby.

You could toss a magnet into your drain pan to see how much steel particles are in the oil. Leave it there while you are removing the bolts then check to see if it's collected anything. Look for gold metal specks in the oil, those are the syncro rings wearing. Now if we could only get to 2nd gear syncro that easy...

Good diagnosis there Defiant!

Cheers,
GTM

That sound like the problem, thing that sucks is that last night before i read this i was driving home through St Paul, MN, and it came out of 5th gear but would not come all the way out, well being that i was in traffice i gave some force to it, and now i can't get it in 5th or reverse.

Thanks for the input i will look into that tonight.
