question about wheel play

I changed the brake pads and resurfaced the rotors on my 98 eclipse. I put everything back together again, nice and tight. I noticed though, on the front wheels that if I grab the top and bottom of the wheel, there is a little bit of wiggle. Maybe 1/8 of an inch. If I grab the sides of the wheel, it is solid with no wiggle. Both front wheels have the same amount of play, and it doesn't matter how the wheel is turned, the play is always vertical and never horizontal. Is this normal?

The only thing I can think of would be the ball joints. Have somebod watch to see what is loose when you wiggle the wheel.

or wheel hubs. Can you hear vibrating when you do gently higher speed turns?

If it were the wheel bearings I would think if it had an 1/8 in of play there would be nothing left. Plus you would be able to hear them growling while going down the road.
