I think it is caused if you drive on roads with salt on them it can cause this to happen. I know many people up north have this issue but never know til the radiator is done for.
This is just what I think. I maybe wrong.
 
Same thing happened to me, took radiator out for room for a exhaust mani swap and the bottom 3/4 of the radiator was green like you describe. Only on the front face though, so I couldn't see it until I took it out.

As for prevention I'd recommend flushing the cooling system, I've never heard of the salt or chemicals up north specifically causing the corrosion.

New rad was about $115, well worth it. My car used to run hot and the new radiator cleared it right up. If yours isn't very bad and you want to risk running on it go for it, but you'll feel especially foolish if it does go out.
