Replacing Starter. How to.

The Haynes manual says that I have to remove the intake manifold to get to the starter. A local mechanic says that you can do it from under the car without removing the intake manifold. Pulling out the intake sure seems like a lot of work just to unbolt the starter. If anyone has experience, please let me know. Thanks.
 
You will have to remove the battery, intercooler hose to the throttle body and can pull it out from the top. The pain is getting it lined back up when you put the new one in. Just make sure your not wearing any watch or rings it will be a fun job. Look at where the starter is and take what I said and figure out a routine to get the starter out.
 
When you say "lining it back up", do you mean the teeth or the casing bolt holes. Thanks for the help!:thumb:
 
I just replaced mine this past summer and all I did was :

+Remove battery
+Remove upper IC pipe

After that, there SHOULD be just enough room to get in there and unbolt things and then *sneak* the old starter out. Afterwords, the fun part is getting the bolt holes lined back up and the bolts started.
No need to worry about lining teeth up b/c the gear in the starter is only engaged when you're starting the engine, otherwise it's retracted away from the flywheel.
