:dsm: I have an annoying problem with my alt. belt squealing. It does it at start-up, and at low rpm, like sitting at a light or stop sign. Especially with the lights on. The belt tension is right on. My battery is new, the only thing I can figure is, the underdrive crank pulley isn't spinning the alt. fast enough, as the squeal goes away above 2200r's. Any ideas? Does anyone make a overdrive pulley "ie. smaller dia." alt. pulley?

thanx

What kind of belts do you have on your car, reason i ask is, I have the same problem with my belt, i changed the altenator and battery and got new belts and still the belts would squeal. My mechanic told me i need to get factory oem belts from mitsubishi instead of the cheap belts from autozone. Some kind of felt lining or something and stronger, so they dont stretch out, and also the pulleys may need to be aligned. I havent gotton to the shop yet to get mine fixed but i ordered all new oem belts, im going to see if that will fix the squeal. I hear its a commom problem with dsms.

I have OEM belts, and mine squeaked for a while (they do it now and again, especially when it's really cold).

I tried some of that "belt dressing" stuff, but it didn't really help much. I think it's basically cleaner, if the belts are oily and slipping.

What I ended up doing is just tightening it up a little bit more than what the manual calls for. Don't just crank down on it, that's bad for the belt, and the pulleys. Just keep increasing the tension a tiny bit at a time (if you feel like you're going too far, it might just be shoddy belts, or something else wrong) until your problem is fixed.

I am having a similar problem in my 1g talon. The alternator belt keeps squealing and eventually comming off. Could this be the same belt problem as above? The one that is on there was a cheap $7 one from advance auto... I just replaced the crank pulley a few months ago, but haven't had a chance to check it tonight.

First things to do is check that the belt tension is correct.
Second is to check that the crank pulley/harmonic dampner hasn't failed and seperated into two parts. If your throwing belts this is the first thing I'd check.

If your still having alternator belt problems clean your pulleys and replace the belt.

Belt dressing doesn't clean the belt it puts some really sticky crap on it and everything near where you spray it. If you use it make sure to clean it off everything before putting a new belt on.

I just replaced the belt a few minutes ago and warmed the car up so I'll see how this goes. None of the pulleys seemed loose when I checked them, hopefully I was just suffering from some sort of "cheap belt" syndrome or something....
