pleasanton,
hey i just went out today to go to a friends house and the car just died. it wouldn't restart right away but it did eventually restart and i drove after about 1-2 min of driving it would die again. this happened about 10 times before i could get it home any suggestions on this?? or has anyone run into this problem before? also the frist few times it restarted i reved it up to make sure it would stay running or not, and it backfired. the car has never backfired as long as i have had it, any help would be great guys

thanks

Hmmm. My car used to choke itself severely every 2 minutes on the dot, enough to shut it off completely. I did two things at once to fix it so I can't be sure which one did the trick. First thing, I replaced a leaking battery (dont see why that would cause it though) - and also reseting the ECU during the process, naturally. Although many will say resetting the ECU alone wont fix the root of the problem, it did the trick for me. So I figure the problem simply lied as an electronic quirk, moreso than a physical problem that was being read by the ECU. Just some ideas of what helped me in the past, I'm sure it could be any other number of things however. ECU wouldn't be a bad place to start though. Here is the thread tracking my similar sounding problem.

I know this is late, but saw nobody gave a crack at this one OMG

Check the battery.

My car was doing the bucking dying thing..kinda like if my car was plugged into a wall...somebody would unlpug it and plug it back in every 3 seconds....it was annoying..I could hear the relays in the car clicking...

It got so bad that my car would just die completely and not want to even turn over...no power, nothing.

I inspected the battery and noticed corrosion.....I took my battery terminals off, sanded them down, cleaned and snaded down all the connectors that go to the little fuse box attached to the battery..put it all back together..and she ran great since.

I would still get your battery checked out...I beleive that mine has a small leak as well (what caused the corrosion) so Im going to jump on a brand new unit.

uhhh oh....had that problem before....dont know if you guys ever ran into it but go to DSM.org to get the part numbers for your ECU capacitors......this is a must thing to do with any 1G....the capacitors start to leak a goo out of them from so many years of cycling themselves and start attacking the fuel circuit causing the car to buck or just shut off and on like someone was playing with a switch......clicking relays and everything like mine was.....you can also get the part numbers off of them after removing them at some TV/VCR repair shop and get new ones at an electronic parts shop....after so much time the ECU WILL GO UP IN SMOKE!.......literally I seen it.....just a thought to not rule out.

i checked the capacitors and didn't see any corosion or anything the board looked great?? and i don't have any clicking coming from the ECU??
