I've heard the 1G lifters from smaller oil passages, and sometimes they
"click" and make the knock sensor react until teh oil pumps back up.
Recently I tried two things which seam to be working great so far....
I swithced to Mobil1 0W-40 and added CD-2 Valve quieter. My thought was the lower weight oil would bve more easily pumped up into the head and through the small holes in the lifters, of course if you have any oil leakes or usage issues a 0W-40 oil may be out of the question.
Here is how it works...warm up car with just oil in it. Then stop engine and pour in 1 bottle of the CD-2 lifter quieter, and restart motor. Within about 3 minutes all the nasty valve ticking tapping and slapping is gone.
I'm not a fan of snake oil, but this stuff works. I have a buddy with an Audi 5000 Quattro who also tried it and it worked great for him too.

I'm not claiming its a "complete fix" the only way you'll get that is to go to the new lifters. I've driven several thousand miles and the ticking is a fraction of what it was...it comes and goes still but it goes quicker and its not as severe. So for those looking for an inexpensive improvement prior to doing a complete lifter trade out, its a good improvement.

There's a lot of people that use that "restore" oil additive stuff (they say to get the 8 cylinder can, I believe), and apparently it does help with lifter tick for a while at least. Some guys I know of have been running it in their car for 10's of thousands of miles with no problems (I however, am a little wary of dumping thick goo into my engine, and would feel much more comfortable just going with the revised lifters)

ABK,
I have a related story!!!
A while ago I flunked emissions inspection so I did a procedure using Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner. After the cylinders were 'cleaned out' of all that carbon crud, not only did I pass inspection [by a hair], BUT that annoying tap-tap-tap stopped completely, SO the moral of the story is: Cleaning the carbon deposits out of the chambers by any means should stop the noises!!!! Whether or not the link that you referred to is a valid cleaning procedure is debateable, though.

I did the MPCC and it worked......for about a week. The sound is driving me nuts, I am probably going to just have to break down and get the new lifters.

Yeah, I'm probably going to give that a whirl along with a OE oil filter cuz I've heard those can help. What do you use? Are those high mileage ones a load of crap? I am probably stupid, but I'm using 10w30, suggestions?
