Ive been looking through the search function but not many people talk about 2g alternators unless they are talking about upgrading. Is there a 2g rebuilt kit or a place on the internet that any of you know of that sells them for good prices? I dont care if its OEM. The local Auto zone has one for 132.00 but Its some no-name alternator that I dont know if its worth even buying.

My experience of recent months & years is the after market parts for a lot of things has dried up. For example buying a diode pack which cost $4.00 for Datsun/Nissan '70-80's can't be found. I've gone to the rubuilders and they don't want to sell them for they want the labor money of installing when I wanted them for a small battery charger.

I see you are down S/D way, you might consider driving across the border and trying some of the auto parts stores in TJ. I use to take a lot of automotive electronics down there for rewinding when no one here in Los Angeles would touch them.

Try the Yellow pages for rebuilders and see if anyone of them will sell the parts. Alternately, you may be able to take it in and have it rebuilt on a wait basis. If it doesn't smell or look burned then chances are it's blown the diodes however you have said nothing on how you arrived at the conclusion it is your alrernator which has failed and not some fuse or fusable link.

If you put a 12v test light on the alt. B+ term and the other end to ground you should have a light with the key off. If not you have another problem. Depending on alt. type when the key is on at least one of the small wires will light with the key in the on position for that is the rotor exciter supply. If there is a second small wire that may glow faintly indicating a completed circuit through those windings.

Cheers,
GTM
