I just bought a 97 gst spyder,90k miles for 8700,9500 after tax, fees,etc.
But now its making this loud weird sqeaking noise that is coming from the engine whenever you first start it and when you are driving. when it is parked or neutral you won't hear it. Plus the clutch is engaging at different levels......or maybe it just might be me because this is my first stick shift? I drive my brother-in-law supra turbo and civic fine. But having a hard time with my new spyder.

How can i get my car check for crankwalk?? What do i tell the mechanic to check for?

And if I have crankwalk, how much would a permanent/long-term fix cost?

Im new to Dsm and I love the spyder i just bought, its fast , turbo is so fawking nice......I want to mod but i want to fix the problems first......

thanks

They dont all get crankwalk, maybe 40%. I would search for dsm owners in your area to talk to. Many dsm owners know much more than everyday mechanics.

How does the clutch feel?

The sound you hear could be a belt, the a/c compressor, etc...

If it is crankwalk, with what you are hearing, you will be building a 6 bolt soon.

Hope this helps.

You won't necessarily have to build a 6bolt.. But before you go off the handle saying your motor walked, check it out. Any mechanic should be able to check crank shaft play.

You are in California, you should not have a hard time finding a shop that specializes in DSMs. Ask around I am sure someone can give you a suggestion.

I have the samething in my 97 GSX, I start the car in these cold mornings in PA, and thie wierd squeking sound is made for a brief second and when i say brief i meen brief. I am worried it is crankwalk but my car only has 49,110 miles. So if it is i have time. But i also know that around 50,00o miles is when it is known to commonly start.

I ordered a Thermal R&D exhaust, and it should be here next week I am going to check for crankwalk then. I will let you know what i come up with, my belt do squel sometimes when it is wet, so i am hoping it is them or a bad pump. I am going to check the tension on the pulleys too.:dsm: Oh well that is the DSM world!

Im sure my turbo-ed 420a wont walk the crank anytime soon ;)

and the problem with the percentages on crank walk is this:
not everyone who gets it reports it, and some people who get it dont knwo thats what the problem is. 40% sounds a littl eon the high side I'd say its closer to 25% but thats ona stock car, anytime you upgrade you always increase the risk of something going wrong.
