NORTHAMPTON,
Ok, I have a 1990 awd tsi with 114,000 on it. I pulled teh engine to regasket it roughly 3000 miles ago because it was getting smoky, figured it could use a once over. Well, anyways, I got it back together and everything was fine. This past week, I noticed that when I would start it, a puff of smoke would come from the exhaust, when the car was cold or hot. As the week went by, more and more smoke, and then it began to smoke really bad when I would come to a stop at idle. I spent today checking for leaks, checking compression, etc, and found nothing. The smoke is white, but I am not taking any coolant or any oil for that matter. Sometimes the smoke turns greyish/black, but it remains mostly white. I changed the pcv valve which was clogged and cleaned the TB and EGR as well. I am running a 255lph fuel pump on stock injectors, and have a hacked mas and uicp, thats all. I figured the smoke was due to a rich fuel reading, even though my A/F meter didnt really get too rich. When I pulled out the first injector, i found out that the cap was cracked. I ordered 550's like I should have a while ago today. I also replaced the stock reg with another stock reg just to make sure that didnt go out. It still smokes. My question is does this seem like a fuel combustion problem, which my friends and I have concluded. Did anyone have this problem, and if so, will the 550 and an adj regulator make the smoke go away. I do have a S-AFCII as well, but I dont really wanna hook it up until spring if I dont have too. If anyone can offer some help, that would be great. I have to use the car to commute to school and work everyday and I need this fixed asap. Thanks.

i replaced the valve seals when i pulled the engine 2000 miles ago, and i am running 3" turbo back exhaust without a cat, so i dont think any of those are my problems.

i would suggest pulling the pipe from between the filter and your turbo to check for shaft play. i noticed in your profile that you haven't upgraded your turbo yet and with 114,000 miles on it, you're probably due for that big 16 or 20g you've been thinking of.

The turbo has 30,000 miles run at 15psi, i swapped it when i pulled the engine. that was the reason my car was smoking before i pulled the engine, my turbp was shot. I checked for shaft play and i checked for oil or moisture in the lower i/c, the upper i/c and the tb, and i found nothing. Shaft is still nice and tight, and i am told that if i blew the seal in the turbo it would be a lot smokier, also with blue smoke. Thanks for the help though.

Im having the same exact issue right now. Before the Turbo Swap the turbo was my problem, it was shot and had alot of shaft play. But after the turbo swap, it still smokes at idle, when u rev it, or when i take off in first gear (normal driving). My guess is it could be either of the 3 things, PCV Valve, Valve Steam Seals, or Turbo seal (once again :thumbdown ). By the way, did u ever find out what the problem was?
