smelly air out of vents

whenever air comes out of the vents, whether the A/C is on or not there is this bad odor.. can anyone tell me how i can fix this, and/or what causes this..

what does it smell like? Maybe your ac compressor is bad. When the ac compressor went in my dads van it smelled like burnt oil.

i don't really know how to describe the smell, but i know its not burnt oil.... it just smells like funk... thats the only way i can describe it

-May be you have fungus grow in your duct, there are spray can stuff they sell at part store, sprey it into the OUTSIDE vent inlet at the bottom of the windshield.

You can also use a very fine mist of a very _weak_ bleach solution, and a spray of Ozium air freshener or Lysol will help.
To freshen-up a car, get an apple, slice it up and set it on some plastic in the rear hatch area, sealed up on a warm day. It'll "soak up" stale air.

if its a sweet smell, it might be antifreeze burning off somewhere.
