Hello all,

I'm in the middle of doing my head gasket and was wondering the best way to clean off the old one sould i just use a razor blade ?

also i seem to have a little rust in my cylinders is this a problem ?

and when i was removing the head both of my cam's rotated to the right can i just rotate them right back to where they were ?

and also what's the best way to find out if the head has warped or not ?

And again thank you all in advance for your input !!

-Yes, a razor blade scraper have more leverage.

-Steel wool can slean off the rust as long as there isn't any deep score on the wall.

-Yes, after you have put in new valve seals, reinstall the cams with the dowel pin at 12:00, fthe exhaust cam will rotate foward a few teeth, just line them up when you install the timing belt.

-Machine shop.

thanks for the reply turboholic

i've been scaping away at the head and block this is talking forever is there an easier way to do this to get the little stuff . could i maybe use a sanding block with some fine gritt sand paper or something. i just want this to come out right the first time you know thanks

-After you have gotten all the big piece off, you can use the sanding block with some fine sand paper on the block, there's some gasket remover spray you can buy at part store.
-Make sure you prime the oiling system prior of installing the timing belt, I spin the oil pump with a drill for one minute to prime it.

DONT steel wool it!!!!!! I highly suggest the gasket spray with the use of the razor........... The last thing you want is to make any impressions on the engine Block. While you at it Definently take you cylinder head to get machined for warp and pressure tested for cracks.

Get a gasket scraper from the parts store, a real steel one instead of a razor blade holder. Be careful to not gouge the deck. I don't like the idea of sanding the block unless it's going to be tanked afterward. Where's all that sand and bits of gasket going?

I'd hit the cylinder rust with WD-40 and shop rags.

Any machinist can check your head for flat in about ten minutes. Be aware that aluminum heads _never_ come off a car flat.

i have used in the past on other cast iron engine blocks, a soft wirebrush wheel on a power drill, which has worked great! just be easy on it and dont put to much pressure on it to dig into the block.
last car i did this on was a cavilier with a 2.2 and it works great,, when i was done i used a shopvac to get anything that droped into the cylinders that i couldnt get off the rags before pulling them.
I drove that car afterwards for 50k before selling it with no probs.
