Well here goes.
I recently changed my tranny fluid to syncromesh.
Now 2 weeks later, it's doing this odd thing.
if I put it in neutral, let off clutch, and try to put it in 1st, it has a constant grind, like I cant even shove it in because it feels like a gear is just spinning.
If I go into second then first it doesn't do it.
What's going on?

try changing back to a normal petrol based fluid. I talked to Jon at TRE and he stated that synthetic has a tendency to move its self out of the way faster than a normal petrol fluid. That means that the syncros loose fluid in there little lines and it cause improper engagement. I think that is what he was saying. It also can be your intermediate shaft going bad or improper clutch disengagement.

Try pushing the clutch back in.

Yeah Lofty push the damm clutch it....LOL You didn't have to push it before you changed to synthetic...And it could be the fluid. Nice little tidbit I learn from this conversation...Plus synthetic has to be warm to really help. Try to let here sit in the driveway for 10 or 15 min before driving, and make sure you push clutch in and run through gears ..then with clutch out in the driveway at idle, . Se if the problem is still there when you pull her out .

Bro, your 1st gear syncros are shot.

To test how your syncros is to have the tranny in neutral, motor running and move the shifter to 1st gear without pushing in on the clutch. The syncro cones should be trying to slow down the geartrain, thus it will slow down the motor a bit.

But, if the syncro is gone, then you'll get this grinding. .. and this test can be done in any gear to test syncros.

You're due for a tranny overhaul or replacement.

Thanks man. I did this test, and thats the only syncro bad.
If I shove it into 2nd [WITH THE GODDAMN CLUTCH IN ] then into first it doesn't grind.
So I guess I'll just baby it like this until I get the money for a new tranny.

Thanks man, you deserve rep for this post.

Make sure you have enough fluid in your tranny. Could just be a little low, or you 1 gear synchro is on the way out.

:dsm:yea i have to drive around mine to...my 3rd gear grinds like hell but if im really really realy easy with it she doesnt grind at all and im not worried bout it until my tranny falls out LOL or until 3rd gear is gone completely cause i have another tranny:dsm:

i have seen a lot of grinding on dsm transmissions. with the clutch completely in. Im not sure why it does that. seems like the clutch is not going in far enough even though you have the pedal down. I did this in a rebuilt transmission too. I wonder if it is the master cylinder needing replacement or something. I read on here a new master cylinder makes a big difference.

if its doing it with the clutch in its either a hydraulic problem, bent fork, or worn pivot ball

..and just to support Lofty on this .. for if he can shift smoothly into the other gears, or even if he started out in 2nd, it's not the clutch assembly for he didn't say anything about hard shifting within the other 4 gears, plus reverse.

His 1st gear syncro is shot, prob from a lot of hard shifting esp downshifting that caused that syncro to wear out. - he's gonna have to do the 2nd to 1st shift method while he's stopped if he doesn't want to hear anymore grinding.

It was more then likely shot when I bought the car, it sat for a long time, and nobody drove it.
I don't think I did it, mainly because I NEVER downshift into first.
Thanks for the help guys.

You don't need to replace the syncros in first, just change the way that you drive. Look up double clutching (and then don't ever use it since you don't need first) my MG came from the factory with no syncro in first. The easiest way to get your tranny into first without that nasty grind is to set the shifter against first and feel for a smooth point as you push the clutch in. Putting the car in first will be hardest if you sit with the clutch in. Putting the car in second while stopped then moving to first will sometimes help too.

No no no no. It only grinds when I go into neutral, if I'm moving and click it in [without letting out the clutch:mad:] it's all good. Double clutching is the only way I downshift. It's hard to do it any other way. :p

LOL thats not good lofty, does it only do it at higher rpms? if so put your foot down faster (clutch) :thumb:
