according to the haynes manual, if the water pump goes bad then there may be a howling noise coming from the drivebelt end of the engine while its running.

the belts on my car look new.. however when i start my car, i get a nasty noise thats something like a cross b/t howling and screeching.

the noise stops after it runs for a while(usually takes between 10 seconds to a minute) depending on how cold the engine is. if the engine is warm it wont make a noise, and the noise gets louder if i give it gas while its howling.

im going to try to get a video today, but i ran it about an hour ago so idk if ill get the noise.

thanks, Karl

Are you sure it's not one of your accessory belts? If your alternator belt or power steering belt is loose it makes a loud squealing/screeching noise for about 10 seconds + on cold start up. If you grab the belt with 2 fingers you should be able to twist it half way around without too much tension or without being too loose.

The belt that goes to the alternator is also the one that drives the water pump. Tighten that belt and the squealing should go away. If it does not, check to see if the belt is damaged. If it is not damaged, check your pulleys and make sure they are all aligned. If they are off just a little bit (loose bolt or bent bracket) then it can cause a lot of noise as it rubs wrong.

You can try putting on some belt dressing on the belt to see if the noise goes away, if it does you know its not the water-pump. If the noise does go away try to tighten the belt, as belt dressing only tempoarily fixes the noise.

my car makes the same noise, its not coming from the accesory drive though, I'm almost sure its the turbo...

Ok, i checked the belt, it seems pretty tight but im going to go grab some belt dressing later today and try that.

thanks for the help so far

The most likely cause is your harmonic dampner (crank pulley). This pulley is basically two pulleys that are glued together. Many times, these two pulleys separate from each other. That is where your screeching is coming from.

Another cause could be that one of the pulleys is rubbing against the timing cover.

I can guaruntee that belt dressing/new belts/tightening the belts is NOT going to solve your problem.
