Hey everyone,

I currently have a problem with my starter not engaging when I turn the key. I hear a click, then nothing. This is not the first time I've had problems with my starter on the car in the 8 or so years I've owned it. I think this is probably the ...fourth time I've replaced the starter on the car.

The general pattern is:
-Starter will start making some scraping noises during first cold start-up (per day) a year or two after I replace it.
-Starter will occasionally not start and then turning the key a few times will start it.
-Starter will not start and turning the key just makes it go "click."
-Replace starter and repeat process in 1-2 years.

My question is more of...what could be causing the starter to fail so early and in the same time frame with the same pattern? Or should I just expect to have to replace it every 1-2 years?

I believe the starter I originally replaced was OEM mitsu, and everything since has been from Autozone.

i see a lot of these through out the day at work we put the starters on the tester and it passes...thats prob your case as well right?well have you checked that its properly engaging the flywheel? because if you have swapped it out once i would say hey maybe your one of the unlucky ones that got a defective starter but more than that you need to start looking somewhere else

So the time between when I came on here and did a search and then posted this thread (roughly 30 minutes), I went back out and it started up fine...LOL. So I did nothing more than wait 30 minutes and the car would start...

I think on the last one when they hooked it up to the tester it was spinning too fast. The one I have is from Kragen (pt # 16939). I'll have to take it off when I get a chance and have them test it and see if its still warrantied.

The flywheel has been changed since the last one went bad so I know that is not the problem, and if it was defective I would think it would be defective from the start, but this one has worked fine for about 1.5 years.

Its just like something is not right and significantly shortening the life of the starter.

just curious but ive seen this alot, is there an oil leak around the starter anywhere? ive seen oil get into starters and make them act up
