Ok I've been at it over an hour and I can't get this thing out. Whoever said it was easy (on a 2G AWD) must know something I don't.

I've removed the DP, T-Case, and unbolted the pan. It just wont come out. I've tried every possible angle, still nothing.

Can anyone give me some advice or do I have to start taking off the wheel to remove the axle?

Thanks for any useful and correct input.

Tom

Have you tried using a plastic (or other material that won't mar the surface) scraper or pry bar of some sort? Put it in between the block and the oil pan and give it a few good whacks with a hammer. Just do that on a few spots around the pan and it should break loose.

It's wedged pretty tight so I've have to bend the hell out of it to get it out. I'd really prefer not to hammer away at this... might break something.

I found that using a big flat blade screwdriver and finding a corner of the pan sticking out a bit from the block, putting it an a angle and hitting it with a rubber hammer, pops off nice, and makes a goofy sound when doing it. you can also find a grove ( i think its on the back side of the engine) like a spot to put a flat blade in and it it with the hammer would also seperate the pan from block. I dont have a block sitting in front of me (its at the machine shop and spare is about 1hr from me) or id take some pictures.

You hammer on the pry bar to push it in. Then move it around to break the seal.

No no no. I have the seal broken. The pan is just not coming out. It's hanging there, wedge between the block and driver side axle.

The seal is broken. The pan wont come out though. It's wedge between the block and axle.

Ok I got it off.

First I tried removing the oil pick up tube which was a PITA, and no go. Then I removed some kind of oil shield right under the crank, still no go.

THEN I noticed the axle was held in place by a holder (where is was being wedged), so I removed the 2 bolts on the back of the block to DISCONNECT the holder for the axle and moved the axle back about 1-2 inches and BINGO, pan dropped right out.

PIECE OF CAKE ONCE YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! :)

I'll take pics and do a write up to help others. In the mean time. This thread is RESOLVED!!!! :)

Thanks all,

Tom

How to remove the Oil Pan on a 2G AWD DSM:

1: Remove the downpipe and transfer case.

2: You need to remove all the oil pan bolts but 2 are blocked by the axle. You'll have to unbolt a bracket holding the axle and move the axle out of the way to get to them (see pic).

3: The bracket will be bolted up just under neath the AC compressor (if you have one).

4: Pull axle down and away to gain access to the blocked oil pan bolts. I used a small crow bar and wedged it in there.

5: You should be able to get to the blocked bolts now.

6: Your oil pan should now be off. :thumb:
