Sorry guys, I know I posted this in the newbie forum, but i completely missed the big PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS sub-forum...so I figured now that I see it, I would post it here instead...

Ok...I finally got my eclipse on the road, but had a really bad vibration and noise from under the car. Its a 1990 gsx with around 202000 on the body with a new motor/trans/tcase. The noise sounded like a clanging...metal on metal or something, and the vibration shook the car, but only on partial throttle and decel. We found the the bushings going around the driveshaft were shot, so I got another driveshaft today with 75k on it. After installing it, the vibration is gone, and so is SOME of the clanging. It still sounds the same, but doesn't happen quite as often. Its mainly heard when coming to a stop. I read the VFAQ on the driveshaft bushing and silicone, but that was for accel. The noise is there on light accel, but Im running open DP because my exhaust is fubarred...so I dont know that its hitting under HARD accel. The clanging is also there if I pop the clutch, but give the car no gas or brake. I am going to try the Silicone in the rubber "boots" around the carrier bearings today to see if that fixes, but do you think this is the same problem as described in the VFAQ and can be fixed the same way, or is there something else you might suggest. Thanks all!

Well, I located where the problem is coming from, but need help with a solution. its not actually the driveshaft...its the rear diff. I am able to rotate the driveshaft roughly 1/8th in or so with the car in gear. When I do that, the gears inside the diff catch the gear that is moving and when it rotates back and forth, there is a clanging sound. Is it possible to repair this, or do you guys think i need a new diff? I'd love a 4 bolt, but Im little on the broke side right now. Thanks!

Sounds like your need new shims in your rear end...yes you can rebuild it...pretty easy...just gotta have Vfaqs.com at your finger tips...all the information you need is in the Search function but for better, less, typing....just go to vFAQs.com .... its should help with everything you need....

Is it OK just do deal with it for now, or is it something that will need to be replaced soon? Thanks!
