Well I was sure something was wrong with my friends 93 Eclipse 1.8L, and after reading dynatos' thread about "Limp Mode 1G TCU Guide" Im positive its in Limp Mode. So long story short I pulled the TCU to look for the common blown capacitor and I think this is it, just no juices all over like said, but it does smell of electrical burns.

Here's some pics for you to help me verify its a blown capacitor.

Tin Box of Death(the rear screw needed vise grips to remove them)!

Side view of the CAP. Im pretty sure it was blue, before it turned pink, am I right? Also you can see the wire is burned and nearly broken.

The entire board incase I missed something that your eyes might catch.

Thanks for helping me verify the TCU is dead. If Im right next will be deciding on just going junk yard tanning, or heading to radio shack.

That's not a capacitor that failed in the first two pictures. It's a resistor. Notice how the board is marked Rnumber next to it.

The capacitor to watch for is the large one next to the green transistor in the metal heatsink more to the middle of the board. It's label will say Cnumber.

So could this still be the reason for the transmission being in LimpMode.

Couldnt quiet understand the wording of your reply. Do you mean "Yes the resistor could be the reason for it going into limp mode, but for what reason did the resistor blow...".

The common blown capacitor is marked C102 had a K stamped on it and is about 1cm wide, by 1.5cm tall. Had a look at it and it has some crusties around it. So thats probally blown to.

Since the new question has become why did the resistor blow? Common thing to suspect would be a short in the ECU harness or on the board itself. The harness is really clean so Im going to rule out the harness having caused the short. Could the gel from the capacitor have caused a short on the curcuit board which made the resistor blow? Sounds possible right?

I don't know the answer, maybe someone does. You may have to inspect all the solenoids and sensors to find the cause.

I've seen plenty of dead TCUs but none where the cap leaking caused the resistor to overheat.

What should I look for? Burned wire coverings, crossed wires, previous owner hack jobs.

The headunit harness looks like a rats nest, and has a few exposed wires. Thats the next project, unless they are related.

Really the under hood wires look pretty clean, lots of oil came off when I engine brited the thing, previous owner tried a valve cover seal replacement and I have never seen such a abuse of orange rtv and it still leaks.

EDIT: Anyone have the part number or the specs for the blown transistor, also the parts number or specs for the blown capacitor(I know search, but might kill two birds with one stone). Like to pick these up from radio shack this weekend.
