My nephew has a '91 Laser that has developed a minor rod knock, I figured I'd teach him how to repair the lower-end of an engine. My problem is I dont know what size engine is in it, to order parts. The engine was replaced about a year ago before he bought it, the only number I found on the block was stamped in, it is KF5M221VPKV with QM7288 stamped below it. Does that help or should I be looking for a data plate somewhere else on the engine? I'm sure you guys will steer me in the right direction! Thanks in advance. I know I'll be back for more assistance in the near future!

Sorry about the delay, I have limited access to the vehicle. Best I can tell it is a sohc cam, it has "CYCLONE" imprinted on the valve cover. Any help would be appreciated. We tried to do a picture, but between my advanced age & his young age we lost the picture on my computer somewhere? dont ask me where.

Is what kind of transmission he has in the car - being the 5sp manual.

Dang! If that rocker cover is a "Cyclone" cover, that head is a 12v head for the 1.8L (4G37) motor.. like mine below!

Those heads are rare as dinosaur dentures to find.

That third valve was Mits ingenious MCA-Jet design - to swirl the intake stream for more complete combustion. There is another DSM'er down in UTAH that tagged a 'Cyclone" head and plans on doing a turbo 1.8 mod to his Eclipse.

Good luck in getting that motor rebuilt, for that head really adds quite the 'oomph' for these little motors.

Thanks for the Information, everybody. To para-phrase a mastercard commercial, Incidentals about $ 88.00, Machine shop services about $200.00, The cost to teach a teenager how to rebuild an engine $ Priceless.

Problem #1: I thought there was a thread on this site that told how to remove the crank without removing the engine? Did I miss something somewhere? Was I wrong? Per the Haynes manual the engine has to come out. Just to disconnect the clutch. I would hate to be the fourth qluiche in the mastercard commercial, old uncle thinks he's good, but turns out to be $ worthless. If we have to pull the engine we're getting everything rebuilt. Help me down this road!!!
