when i first start driving my car (ie: cold engine) my turbo make a horrible screeching sound. i never let it spool to much for fear of hurting something even more than it already is, but it runs just fine. the noise goes away after i go through the gears a few time...its almost like the turbo's not getting oil and then eventually it gets lubed and the noise gradually goes away. after that its business as usual...the turbo's a stock t25 running 14psi w/flipped bov. it holds pressure all the way up to 14 and stays, pulls strong (except for the ocasional flutter through 2nd gear...more like a jolt as if i'm hitting a bump but the roads perfectly smooth.) is it time to quit being lazy and put the 14b in, or is there something i can check first?

Check the shaft play immediately. Remove the intake boot and try to move the turbo's shaft in/out and up/down with your fingers. I have the feeling you're going to find a ton of shaft play.

If that's the case, you'll need to get that turbo replaced as soon as possible. T25's have a history of shredding the thrust plate and journal bearings, which will put the shredded metal down the oil drain and into your engine's oil pan.

flipped bov? like as in you switched it? when I did this to my car I got HORRIBLE compressor surging so I immediatly took it out. Also you can check the turbo for any shaft play before just taking it out for no reason.

thanks for the quick replies guys. i needed something to do on my day off tomorrow, and now i guess i've got a little project. i was suspecting that the turbo was going because the cars got 134k miles on it. 77k of those with a middle aged lady, the rest with me.

yeah, my stock bov is flipped. i only get compressor surge when i'm driving easy and i gently take my foot off the gas from about half throttle or so, i've been driving around like this for about three years with no problems. well, until lately with the turbo making noise and all.

so i messed with the car a little today. i'm not really sure what the tolerances are for shaft play. i can move it a little side to side, but none at all in and out. it feels like the nut on the end isn't on all the way, but its not lose. the blades spin free and smooth, but if i put a little pressure on the shaft the blades get caught.

i have a 14b sitting in my room, but it doesnt seem to be in very good shape. the blades dont spin free and are a little rusty. if anybody knows how to rebuild a turbo and wants to trade my 14b plus cash for a working 14b or s16g i'd be more than happy to.
