I have a 90 talon N/T 5spd with 134k on it, just had the timing belt and camshaft balance belt replaced last year. Recently it has been difficult to start I'm having to remove the remove the hose from the intake and spray it with starter fluid. when it finally starts it struggles to stay running until it warms up and idles at around 600 but i have to hold on the throttle cable and make adjustments for a few mins to keep it from stalling out. after replacing the hose to the intake the idle jumps to 1200-1300 and stays stable and will start with no problems as long as its still warm. any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Tryed adjusting the idle from the instructions on this site: 1G BISS Adjustment and the idle won't go any lower than 900 rpm. If the idle goes below 1000 the engine shakes and sputters. Also, noticed that there's moisture coming from the tail pipe, but the car isn't smoking and the oil isn't milky.

Have you replaced your fuel filter lately? Also might wanna clean your injectors.Just a thought:)

Also do a compression check for peace of mind

I had a new fuel filter put in around May last year and we've run Lucas injector cleaner through it several times. Also, it has new spark plugs and cables. Not sure how to do a compression check. Is there any way to do it yourself or does it have to be done by a mechanic?

Did a bit more searching the net and figured out we can do it. About what should the compression be for it (missing my book right now.)

Checked the compression and according to the book its good. The results were 180 185 195 190. Any thing else it might be?

Our mechanic suggested testing the coil pack. Tested all 4 and didn't get anything from the tester. Thinking the coil pack is about dead since no spark is getting to the spark plugs. I'm thinking the coil pack is the same for 90-94, not too sure though. I know of an auto eclipse that should still have it and working or would this not work in a 90 Talon?

Edit: Put the new coil pack in and same as before but actually getting spark now. Also, the MAF sensor does work, unhooked it and the idle drops.

"I'm having to remove the remove the hose from the intake and spray it with starter fluid"

"will start with no problems as long as its still warm"

those sound like cold-start fuel enrichment issues.....but if the coil pack was dead, then how did the motor run at all?

I'm guessing compression ignition using low octane fuel. Runs better with the new coil but still won't start with a cold engine. Still have to use the starter fluid to get it started.

Running smooth at 700-800 RPM but it's still having problems with cold starts. The ECU is confirmed bad and was tested at local mechanic with a full diagnostic, corrosion spot on board it thinks there's a bad O2 sensor. Could this be why it won't start cold?
