I don't know where this plug goes, it comes off the same branch that has the starter wires on it. It has one single black wire with a yellow stripe coming out of it. (I'm assuming a ground for something... but what?)

Not sure if it's the same for 2Gs, but for the 1G there's a single wire connector that goes into the starter solenoid terminal. It also branches off of the starter wire loom, so it really can't go anywhere else.

Agreed. Starter solenoid. A smaller terminal connects to the starter and the part you are showing is either the other end of that wire or the part coming out of the harness just under the cam sensor.

Not sure if you noticed from the pic, but that is not a single plug as the one you are referring to is.

The plug is 2 pin but there's only 1 wire on it according to my 99 mitsu factory diagrams. I agree with squeak104.

well shoot. that means I plugged the wrong wire into the starter. there is some other 1 prong wire that I plugged into that little male tab connector that comes off of about the same area where you bolt on the starter power cable.

Why would the starter need a ground wire? Isn't it ground by being bolted to the block?

You're right, the starter doesn't have a ground wire. The connector that's currently on the starter solenoid now isn't white/clearish is it?

There are no ground wires going to the starter. A black wire doesn't necessarily mean it is a ground. The black with yellow stripe runs from solenoid to wire harness to the starter solenoid beneath the radio.

There are 2 black/yellow wires for the starter on a 1g.

1. is a 4 gauge wire that goes to one of the 2 mounting bolts for the starter. This is the starter ground wire.
2. The other is a 16 gauge wire that goes to the starter solenoid.

Your 2g might be slightly different, but I wanted to point out that there is a ground for the starter that needs connected. It pulls over 100 amps from the batt and needs a separate ground wire for that amount of current draw.

On the starter solenoid it IS a 1 pin plug with 1 black/yellow wire. Further back this same wire goes into this 2 pin connector you've found which connects it to the wire that goes to the starter relay, ECU, and other stuff. This is what squeak104 is talking about.

Yes the starter ground is being bolted to the block with battery negative on it's mounting bolt (the mounting bolt is better than the block since the highest current draw goes to the starter so you want the least resistance there).

sorry I haven't gotten back sooner, classes are starting to catch up on me, lots of projectsd due..

so if that plug is the other end from the one that gets plugged into the starter, then where does that plug into? Is there a connector somewhere else on the wire loom, or something coming out of the firewall that i've missed that goes into it?

I think it's another connector on the wire loom. My diagrams don't show physically where it is. Squeak104 seems to know ("the part you are showing is either the other end of that wire or the part coming out of the harness just under the cam sensor") - pm him for more info. Check continuity of that connector wire to the starter end to make sure we have that part right. What color is the connector?

The wire you have in your hand attaches near the thermostat area or better yet, inbetween the passenger side motor mount and the head, just lower and somewhat hidden depending on mods. (my harness attachments are pretty much all broken, so the area won't be exact.) The wire it attaches to leads to the starter. It's the smaller wire that's black with a yellow stripe.

You can easily find the wire that attaches to the wire you're holding by accessing the small wire off the starter (black w/ yellow stripe) and following it up. You will be under the car looking up. If you have a GST it will be easier, while a GSX is a bit more stuff in the way. You'll find, in your case, it hanging loose.

Here is a few pictures to illustrate. You can see here it's the same connector. If you look below, on top of the BOV, you'll see the other side. If you look closely, you can follow the wires back and see where the dissapear into the harness. They're actually pretty close together. Mine happen to be more exposed than yours will be because I'm tracking some electrical problems, but with the lenthwise cut in the loom, it's easy to check the wire hidden within to make sure it's black/yellow.

More pics needed? Let me know.

The plug you're looking for. That should do it, hopefully.

thanks, great photos and help...

but, my fault, I forgot to mark this resolved already.

the current update is runs, sounds great, massive post-turbo exhaust leaks (my gaskets look like cheese cloth, ha) and leaking from the oil filter housing, so not on the road.
