I have a 96 awd tsi with 100k miles on it. There is a strange noise coming from the rear of my car when I am driving. It is kind of like a low humming noise that gets louder as I go faster. At around 30 its really soft but around 70 it gets pretty loud. The noise does not change whenever I hit the brakes, shift into neutral, or rev the engine. It makes no difference what gear I am in, just the speed I go.

Repairs performed so far:
Passenger side rear axle replaced
Passenger side hub replaced
New rear brakes
Fluid changed in rear differential (small amount of metal shavings in oil but appeared to be normal for a diff with 100k miles on it)

Any help or suggestions would be great.

Check your Transfer case or driveshaft carrier bearings. My car also had the same problem and it was the transfer case bearings.Very easy to rebuild by the way.If it's your driveshaft you can do the free mod in here with the silicone caulk to get rid of any play in the rubber bushings.Hope it helps.

If the rubber bushings are gone from the axles, you shouldn't just refill them with oil again. Its not good to do that. Even buying new bushings usually ends up with you replacing them within a few years. buying new axles is much easier. RAXLES makes really good oem axles for good prices.

EDIT: NEVERMIND. Didnt see you replaced the axles.
