Apperently this is a rare problem as a search turned up nothing even close.

I recently put a 94 turbo 4G63 into a 92 NT car and everything worked just great when I test fired the car, except the odometer rolls over while the engine is idling.

The car is on 4 jackstands and is missing the passenger side CV axle..I forgot that was out or I wouldn't have started the car.

Would lack of fluid in the transaxle cause the odometer to turn while the engine idled?

If not,what do I check?

Well, I'm not sure, but I'll take a shot. If I'm not mistaken the speedo is cable operated. If you are idling the engine and you're on jackstands and even though you are in neutral you can still spin the axles enough to operate the speedo and odometer. If you install your axles and put it on the ground and the vehicle is not moving and the above situation exists , .... well that's another matter. Put it back together and see what happens when the tires are not moving.

I let it get to operating temp to open the thermostat so I could fill it with coolant...maybe 10 minutes or 8/10ths of a mile, haha.

Maybe the axles not being in it is whats doing it,the one thats in there is the original 92 axle which has a 1" slined input shaft, the transaxle is a 94 which used an 1 1/4 splined input shaft. The splines are not locked in the transaxle and the CV axle is basically just an oil seal for now.

Maybe this is a rare problem because I'm the only dumbass to start the motor with no axles.:tease:

I went and got a quote out of the turbo conversion thread where I mentioned starting the car and heres the response from TimG:

"Do yourself a favor and don't start the car without any tranny fluid again. Your input shaft is still spinning in there and you could be damaging the bearings and/or shaft."

That would about explain it!

Well, I was wondering why you were running it without the axles in it. You just never know. Anyway, good luck.

Hope you survive the horse laugh routine that is sure to come. ;o)

even if you jack the car up with axles wheels and all the wheels will spin slowly while in neutral but you can stop then with your hands no problems just some friction working its way through the transmission
