my jdm pistons say 63TR

I might be way off base but I bet the 63DT would be the standard piston and the R would make it a factory replacement unit.

The motor came with the spark plug wire cover that says "Tuned by Amg"

I have seen those covers on ebay several times, someone probably just put that cover on there. Is the engine 6 bolt or 7 bolt? Its probably an EVO or Galant VR4 engine. What kind of 16g? big, small , EVOIII ? 63DT is what 1g pistons say and 2g say 63DTF1 I think the T in the #s means turbWTF!!n another site a saw a reference to a 63DTR piston in a Galant VR4 if the engine is 6 bolt I would guess thats most likely what it is.

The motor is a 6 bolt. I know it did come out of a galant tuned by amg. but I know it is not just a regular jdm swap. The intake elbow 2 1/4 inch, so it is bigger than other six bolts. The intake manifold says "Turbo Intercooler". I dont know my 16g's very well, but the wastegate dump is ported and the wheel is obviously a 16g wheel. it is a little bigger than a stock 14 b housing. Also it came with an AWD tranny and transfer case. And 510 yellow top injectors. and ngk spark plugs and wires.

Not sure about the pistons, but that is a Big 16G. Judging from the dual runners, it looks like the manifold is similar to the cyclone.

The stamping on the housing (49178-01420) identifies it as a Big 16G. the 91-91 RS version motors came with 510cc Injectors and a big 16G, although I still can't explain the valve cover and intake mani.

49178-01420 = big16 , I think that engine is from a Galant VR4 4G63 (RS) Limited Edition 240bhp. Big Injector 510cc, Eci Multi Intake Manifold, Big 16g Turbo. TD05. It is NOT from an AMG Galant those were non turbo someone just swapped the spark plug cover It is still a nice engine, and for a turbo car you would not want the AMG engine anyway. :thumb:

im confused now. So will the pistons in that motor say what mine says (63DTR). My oil cap is yellow. There is another difference. I thought my motor was really rare.

Yes 63DTR is from a Galant VR4, you do have a rare engine that one has more HP, bigger injectors, turbo etc.. than a regular VR4 engine. You cant use accessories like an oil cap and spark plug covers to identify the engine those things are easily lost, changed, etc.. The rest of the engine points to it most likely being the VR4 240HP .

Yupper. From what I researched a while ago, there were optional features on the GVR4s in Japan that were not available in the US, such as turbo, and engine. I believe the R in DTR is the "Rally" option designation or something like that. My JDM 6-bolt motor measured 180psi across, I have yet to pull the head, but expect to find something similar when and if I do. By the way, did you happen to perform a compression test on your motor? And if so, what were the results?

Sorry to highjack, I wanted to verify the piston numbers above.
The car I bought supposedly had the 2g pistons installed, I have the head off and the crown number is 63DT-F1.

I did not do a compression test before I ripped the motor apart. However I thought it was quite interesting that the wrist pins on my 63DTR's are very similar to the 2g wrist pins rather than 1g wrist pins. I think the 63DTR's have 2nd gen compression. Did you get the big 16g and yellow top injectors? was your tranny switchable between fwd and awd? Mine was not. for the other guy on this thread. I am now doing 2g pistons/ 1g rods for a friend of mine and these pistons say 63DTK. The pistons were from a 92 7 bolt. After I finish this motor I will rebuild my jdm swap.

Pistons from a 92 7 bolt are the same compression as the 1g 6 bolt pistons they are not the higher compression 2g 7 bolt pistons.

Yes 63DT F1 is a 2g piston
