I'm going to give a quick rundown of the story and then ask my questions. I left Tampa, FL last week had the oil changed prior to departure. Drove to Mississippi, then to ATL... Drove from ATL back to Mississippi and stoped to get food... I noticed the smell of buring oil and I see a lil smoke (white/grey color) coming out my exhuast. I'm thinking hey its cold up here maybe thats just the condensation in the air, and its a long trip probably just a lil old oil buring off. I get back to Mississippi and start the car two days later. Theres more smoke from the exhuast but it dissapates quickly, I drive the car about 80 miles and stop for fuel. I'm now smelling a more distinct odor in the air of buring oil. I check the oil and there is none on the dipstick! Panic a little and but then remember there is still probably 2 quarts of oil in the pan. So I put in about 2.5 more quarts of oil and check the oil. Dipstick looks good I check under the car for leaks and I'm all clear. I start the car up it's running fine and proceed to drive it. Suddenly whitesh grey smoke is pouring from the exhaust, billowing cloud upon billowing cloud of smoke pour out the exhaust.

My question is I'm now stuck in MS (got the car towed to my g/f house). I'm thinking its my turbo because the car drives perfectly no knock, tick, or ting. Its idles perfectly and is still driveable with good acceleration so I dont think its internal engine damage. I have a new motor with 23,000 miles 100,108 miles on the car (and turbo). My question is I have a basically stock set-up only mods are an intake and a bov.

MY QUESTION: Can I install a evo3 16g turbo on the car with a fully stock set-up not boosting more than the stock bcs allows to get me home? I just want to get home right now! I have plans up upgrading everything later, this isnt the time for mods I just need to get home to Tampa, FL HELP!!! I have limited knowledge and limited tools but I have to fix this quickly and get home.

I had taken the turbo off, apart, and back on within 8 hours of owning a DSM for the first time. Two hours of that was waiting for the hot parts to cool down enough for me to handle them. I didn't even have a torque wrench. Basic hand tools is all it takes. If you don't have gaskets, and the old ones are shot, you can use axle grease. It will burn up and turn into a carbon seal. I re-used the crush washers too. You're not supposed to do any of that, but I wasn't about to wait. If it's a little drippy that's not a huge deal, lots better than a smoke screen. You'll wanna change the oil and the coolant afterwards.

Make sure it's the turbo first, check for shaft play and oil in the IC lines.

You'l be fine with the bigger turbo. I'd run a vacuum line straight to the WG can so you'll be making the lowest amount of boost possible.

You will be fine doing that.
Like you said though, keep the boost down.

You have all the gaskets and new crush washers on hand?

Should only take you a few hours tops to swap....Might as well try it...

Id also check the turbo on the car first. (for shaft play) Just to be sure.

I haven't purchased a Turbo yet, I'm going to check this afternoon for shaft play and oil in the intercooler. However when I purchase the Turbo I know there is a 2g install kit will it come wih the new crush washers and gaskets?

What vaccum line are you talking about? I was thinking about just purchasing a MBC to control the boost and keep it really low, are you saying I may not need to right now?

Forget about the MBC, plug the sense line from your intake manifold direct to the waste gate actuator. That will keep the boost down to factory levels and a safe setting to get you back to FL.

Yeah, no need for a MBC. I would check the turbo for shaft play and check the intercooler pipes for oil. I hope it is just the turbo and not something worse, good luck!

It wouldn't be factory settting. The wastegate would open depending on the rating of the spring installed in the wastegate.

The install kit should come with everything you need.

Make sure to double check that though.
If anything, crush washers can be found at some auto stores, and gaskets can be made...It would suck a lil more, but it should get you home.

And like mentioned, no need for a MBC. Just go straight to the WG.

UPDATE: Check the turbo for Shaft play and I noticed in and out movement of about 8 mm. The side to side and up and down dint move to much. I also found oil in the turbo and a oil/ coolant (choclate milkish) residue in the intercooler and piping. I am assuming this is why I have the plumes of whitish grey smoke billowing from my exhuast. The oil and coolant are buring immediatley on the exhuast side of the turbo? I am looking all over the ocuntry for a shop who can get me the turbo here the fastest...

I guess I'm a visual learner so when you say sense lines from the intake manifold I'm lost also which line goes into the turbo and where does the extra line from the bcs go? DO I just remove the v section and allow the BCS to go straigt to the turbo and then take the "SENSE" line from the intake to the wastegate? Sorry I've ripped out the motors in DSM's and installed short blocks and heads but with the aid of manuals, garages, and time. I have to do this in a parking lot with limited tools as qucik as possible to get back to work so I want to make sure everything is correct.

thanks everyone!!

8mm MY GOD!!!! if you have that much in and out play, that turbo is SHOT.. some side to side or up and down(depending on the angle of your head at the time) is okay, but you want minimal to no play in the thrust or "in and out" movement of the wheel/shaft assembly. Get that thing replaced and get home. I may know some people in your area with tools. If you don't have any tools or anyone to help you PM me and i'll see if i can get some of my motorcycle buddies in that area to help out if they are near enough. Just make sure to let me know what town you're in and i'll try adn get you in touch with some one if you need.

Best of luck on getting home!

EDIT: I have no clue what a "sense line" is, but they are saying just run a vacum line directly to the wastegate actuator so your boost will be at the lowest possible setting.

I'm thinking about goin all out and getting the SBR 2G Total Package.

Slowboy Racing, Inc. :: DSM :: Turbos :: Mitsubishi :: SBR 2G Total Package

It has everything to bolt up the 16g to my car plus the larger manifold and O2 housing is this an overkill to get home? I figured I'm going to have to upgrade everything anyway why not start with this? Any Ideas or experience woud be appreciated!

Link doesn't work. It may be "overkill" just to get home. But if you're going to do it anyway, and you have the time and money, i say do IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

keep us updated!

All i got to say is if you want the fastest company in the country dont go with slowboy or you might never get home

Yup... Slowboy does have a reputation of being slow on everything they do. But they are starting to get better.

you might wanna try a different shop..extremepsi always helped me out and i always got my parts in 4 days (and im in germany)

agreed on the slowboy, they are getting better but boy their shipping is slow. :toobad: no pun intended. good luck!

Slowboy said they can get the full kit to me by Sat. with full porting. They had everything in stock and are currently porting it right now. It should ship out this evening and arrive Sat. I'll see what happens...

You guys do realize that he has a 98? Doesn't he need a 16g install kit for a 2g (jpipe)

Absolutely

Shaun got a evo 3 ported, o2 housing ported, and install kit. I also advised him to get the $100 upgrade because since he was doing the install in a parking lot, he did not have access to a drill in order to open up the holes on the 2g oil return line. Therefore, I got him the 1g one which is a direct bolt on and the new water line as well.

I didnt want him to struggle like I did the first time I did a small 16g install on my 2g and not realize that the oil return line didnt bolt directly up

Well I'm finnally back home! Got the new turbo installed and I learned NOTHING is a easy bolt on. I'm working with the guys from Slowboy to improve their "total 2g install kit" becuase it was lacking in several areas. The kit was missing several bolts and screws to make it complete and the evoIII o2 housing does NOT bolt up to a stock 2g downpipe. The intercooler piping has to be trimmed and adjusted because of the front motor mount, as well as having to salvage a variety of parts from the old turbo. Aside from that the install was a breeze and Jeff over at Slow Boy was a big help. I'm hoping to help them make the install kit perfect so if someone in my similar situation can have everything they need.

As for the turbo it's kinda weird, its ALOT quiter than the t-25 and doesnt really spool until 3400-3700 rpm's (could be casue by a exhuast leak from the hack job I did on making the 2g downpipe fit the evoIII o2) I havent been totally impressed by the turbo yet but I still have to upgrade my exhaust, fuel pump, injectors, DSM link, intercooler and turn the boost up. From what I 've seen it has potential I'm just curious to see how much!

thanks for the help everyone, this site kicks ass!

Shaun good to hear you made it home!

As far as the kit, most people re-use the o2 housing bolts without any problems but I am going to see if we can add them in there in the future, they arent very expensive so it shouldnt be too much of a problem.

As far as feedback for us, what other parts did you have to salvage? I think we got all of the gaskets covered (along with crush washers, etc) I will forward it on to the correct people and we can update the kit as necessary so it is a "complete package" :) I know you probably had to re-use the DP gaskets and the only reason that isnt included in the kit is not everyone changes their o2 housing when they change turbos - we might be able to get that as an add-on to the kit though so you guys dont get everything and realize you need a $2 gasket - thats kind of a kick in the balls LOL

The IC piping you will have to fiddle with a little as every kit has a little bit different piping and we unfortunately cant make a kit for each one - shouldn't be too bad though.

And no problem for helping I dont mind at all, and in return I am going to help you out with the rest of your setup since you have been a very good customer and have been very understanding through the whole process.

Give me a ring or email when you are ready for an exhaust system!
