Ok, I know that these are kinda broad, but any input would be appreciated.

I'm pulling the engine/tranny on my 95 TSI AWD (manual) this next week. I bought it for cheap, and in theory, the engine is blown. I'm not too sure it is now. I drained the oil (there were about 8-10 quarts in it) and there are no metal shavings in it at all. The kid that blew the engine had forgotten to put the drainplug back in after an oil change, and locked it up. Anytime I've been around a blown engine, there were shavings in the oil. It's always been v-8s though, so I'm not sure if the 4 cylinders are different or what. I'm gonna grab the starter out of it and take it to Autozone so they can test it, it doesn't sound like it's engaging at all.

Secondly, the clutch goes straight to the floor. It comes back up only if I grab it and pull...then it stays until it's pushed again.

Anyway, any ideas?

Thanks,

Jofus

the clutch issue sounds like a broken clutch slave cylinder or mastercylinder. you can check these pretty easily by pressing in the clutch and seeing if fluid goo's up from the slave cylinder. you could also have bubbles in your clutch fluid

I am hoping that you are mistaken. There should not be that many quarts of oil in the engine. The correct amount is just shy of 5 quarts. It wouldn't hurt to check but if the car ran without oil then the engine is most likely shot. You said that it ran without the oil plug, but then you drained the oil. So was their oil put back in after the engine seized up?

As far as the clutch, your not getting the correct fluid pressure in your line. IT would be a couple things.

1.) Make sure you have fluid in there
2.) Check for leaks
3.) Try to rebleed your clutch
4.) Maybe a faulty slave cylinder

I suspect the guy before me put in a different dipstick, because it showed ok on it. God himself only knows why he'd do that or why he'd dump so much oil in. My drainpan is 5 quarts, but it not only overflowed...I put the plug back in, and emptied it into a large grapejuice jug. When I pulled the plug again, it almost filled it again. I have a feeling that fellow tends to fill in information gaps with made up stuff. Thats a big part of why I'm going to yank the engine this week and go through it. I want to make sure whats what. I'm going to pull the tranny with the engine, and correct any issues with it then.

Thanks a ton, I'm anxious to get it on the road, but it'll be alot better to get it done right the first time.
