I haven't started the car in a few weeks. I went to crank it over, went to fire as normal, heard a pop-ish sound, and died - never idled or fired really.

Now it just cranks over "easier" - never firing or attempting to start.

It felt like the starter gave loose or something... so I jacked the car up in the front and then I noticed smoke coming out of the exhaust a little.... so then i was like maybe it is turning over...

So it is turning over, just no attempt to fire... spins easier than before too...

What should I be checking first? Thanks for the help...

That sounds bad. If it's spinning faster while cranking, you probably lost compression somehow. The timing belt could have jumped a few teeth and caused the valves to bend.

If the timing belt did snap/break... wouldn't I be bending the $&!# out of some of the valves when cranking it over??

I need to check the compression and timing belt... but I thought it wouldn't crank over like that ya know?

Any time you have a no start condition always make sure you have: Air(compression), fuel, and spark. And of course that your battery is fully charged. Spark is easiest so start there and check the rest.:talon:

One other thing before I start this morning... I have a weird feeling that it jumped timing on the belt, like a tooth or something...

1) Can these motors jump 1 or 2 teeth and still crank over without bending valves?

2) How/Where can I check to see if it did in fact jump a tooth...

Thanks!

OK so I pulled the timing belt cover and cranked it over. Belt spins so I guess it's not the starter...

I pulled a plug wire and put a different spark plug into it, cranked the engine over... no spark. Does the plug have to be resting against something metal?? I hope I'm doing something wrong... what would "pop" then make the car have no spark yet still crank over?

One other thing... if I pull the 20amp Engine fuse will that reset the ECU? Reason I ask.. I grabbed the little OBII thing and for some reason 5 of the sensors haven't reset yet... only thing is i didn't reset anything recently. I hope that pop noise wasn't the ECU... ??

LOL help is appreciated....
