i have a 90 gsx that i recently put a new head gasket (w/ new bolts) and new belts ... i have assembled everything and plugged everything back in but it still won't start. my timing is good, i have spark and am getting fuel, my compression is 125-130-130-145. when i try staring it gallops and stutters a bit but no start. it will start for a few seconds with starting fluid ... also my ecu or something around that area "clicks" when i try to start and i am getting a "humming" noise from the intake manifold area that stopped when i unplugged the last injector on the left ... my tech buddy @ nissan thinks it is just old gas (it has been sitting for like almost 2 years now) ... but i am lost   :(

Go with the cheap and easy solution first and get some gas. But I will tell you I got a '90 to fire up and drive itself onto a trailer after having sat for three years.

Did you blow out the thread holes for the head studs? I bet you have hydrolocked your head studs, which could explain the crummy compression numbers. The only way to know on that one is to take the head back off and try it again.

i doubt it's that ... my coil pack is sparking and i hear a kind of clicking and humming sound from the throttle body/intake manifold area... i switched injectors and it sounds better but it won't stay idling for long... also i have this surge of pressured air? coming from the intake area also ... leak? i did get it started for a while and it sounded angry WTF ... i think my car is just a piece of shit

also ... i don't have head studs ... i bought new head bolts, new head gasket, new belts, new water pump, pulleys and tensioner. i also just got my head back from the machine shop...

Okay, you are correct you don't have STUDS you have BOLTS. So did you blow out the head BOLT threads?

The clicking and such is probably your ISC motor.

Does the surge of pressurized air come in sudden bursts that are persistent?

If you did not blow out those thread holes then I am standing by the hydrolocked head bolts, I have seen and done it before.

i have yet to check the threading ... i am certain i have bolts, i needed a 10 hex socket on an actual bolt, no nuts involved. i was thinking the isc motor also. i had it running for like 5 minutes yesterday but it seemed like it was getting hot fast. the air isn't really consistent but it sounds like a vented bov

Think about it, if the head is not fully torqued into place then when the compression builds it is going to blow it out the side.

that actually does make sense ... i double checked it before i put the valve cover back on but
i haven't rechecked it. maybe i need a new torque wrench...

If you did not take an air gun and actaully blow out any debris from those bolt holes then the smallest amount of fluid can cause you to have hydrolocked your head bolts onto the fluid rather than torqueing them onto the head.
