long story short I have just bought new 95 gst completely stock dsm. The motor was knocking very badly, so while pulling the head off so that way I can get it ready to be placed on the new block I have, I can not turn the crank, I've used sockets, ratchets even tied both to rope and tied it to my other car and let it roll to try and turn and it will just keep it the car sitting there, I have the car in neutral, emergency brake up/down, key in the ignition, both front tires off the ground, I know the timing belt and balance shalft belts are fine due to car turning over before I even touched it and it able to drive short distances, am I missing something stupid or is it something else.

Am I missing something or if you are putting in a New Block why do you give a damn if the OLD Block that KNOCKS is frozen up?

need to pull head off motor
old motor starts up fine but crank will not turn
don't want to cut the timing belt even though it will work
but need to put bad motor that starts up and runs to tdc so that way I can put the timing on correctly and not create another post saying that I have a head that was pulled that wasn't at tdc and my block is what do I do.

Am I missing something here also? You say it will start and run but you can't turn the crank by hand? Then your are doing something wrong. very wrong. If it starts then turning by hand will be no problem. If you can't turn by hand then it will never start. Meaning something is binding the engine internally. And like buck said if your pulling the head then don't worry about lining the timing marks up on that engine. You can line the cam gears up with the head off then set it on the new block.

Just jerk the Good Head off the bad Motor no matter whether it's at #1 TDC or not - You can EASILY put the removed Head at #1 TDC AFTER you remove it & prior to reinstall - Hopefully I now undersood your question.

problem solved pulled the timing belt cover off and crank pulley off, slapped a wrench on it and just sat there for 15 mins beating the wrench with a hammer, till it finally broke free of whatever was stuck then finally was able to move it to tdc. thanks guys.

Let's hope it wasn't your valves. You should have just taken the head off like already suggested multiple times, how hard can it be to rotate the CAM gears so both dowel pins are at 12o'clock after the head is off?

LOL, I never ever put my engines at TDC when I do anything to them. The time it takes to get it lined up right is not worth it, and it always moves! For future reference, if you have to beat on a wrench to get your engine to turn over, you're probably breaking something important.

I'm not sure how to explain this but, if my valves were damaged and caused this problem, then how can it hurt to bang on it a little... so either way if I put it or not they were gone, maybe banging on them will make it easier for me to tell when the head off never know, LOL can't break whats already broken I guess thats what my point is, also good news is it didn't jump timing though. :)
