Saskatoon,
Hey guys, So i'm new here and hopefully you can help me out. I know that this has been talked about before but I searched everywhere for a clip of how a noisy valve train on these cars and i have not been able to find a thing.
So I've had a 1993 Eagle Talon TSI awd for about a year and a half now and for the last couple months it has been making some weird sounds, which i think are coming from the head. There has been no change in performance, gasmileage or idling. The motor does vibrate fairly hard when accelerating down around 2000rpm before the boost kicks in. It boosts a constant 14 PSI and hits that around 3300rpm with the stock turbo. No check engine light has been thrown since i first got the car. This car has been making these sounds during cold weather -10C and continues to make them up to +30C so i dont think temperature is an issue. The motor makes the same sounds whether it has just started or is completely warmed up. The only thing makes this weird noise go away is when the motor is revved up above 3000rpm. The car sounds like my neighbors John Deere tractor until it hits 3000, then it sounds great.
The motor is not heavily modified. The boost is upped 2 psi (wow, nothing compared to half the people on this site), all emission equipment (minus the EGR) is removed and a turbo back exhaust. I just changed the timing belt and the timing is right on. I made sure that the oil pump was also in the right location. While doing this I also cut the belt to the rear balance shaft. This sound was happening before I did the timing belt as well. However, i must apologize, i got a little frisky with the tensioners and the belts are squeeky, I'm fixing that right now actually.
The car makes this sound whether it is sitting in my driveway or going down the street in any gear. This sound also increases linearly with engine rpm. I am sure that it is very hard for you guys to diagnose a problem with simply text alone, so i took some time to take a couple videos. I dont have a video camera so i used my digital camera, thus the audio isn't the greatest. I took my laptop out later and used a computer microphone to record the sound. I put them all together and posted it on youtube so you guys could help me easier. So i apologize if this is the common tick that dsm's make, but if it is at least there will be a video for others to compare to. Please help and thanks for your time.
