I purchased a stock 97 GST with a bad turbo a while back. I replaced it and cleaned all the oil in the intercooler and all intake piping up to the throttle body with gas. I even replaced the valve seals. But it still smoked under boost, blueish smoke. I checked compression and got 150 on all. I checked the oil return line and it's clear all the way through. I replaced the PCV valve too. The only thing I can see is that somebody did a bad job of using silicone to patch the broken stem on the stock BOV that goes to the intake.

So after all this I took it out for one more drive. I left a smoke show on my street under boost. What could be left? Coolant level is good and it has the same smell when your valve seals are bad, oil burning. It doesn't smoke at idle. I have receipts where the engine was rebuilt 10k ago. The car idles and runs great. I'm stumped.

So, is there a hidden puddle of oil that still remains burning away that I don't know about? Maybe in the intake?

dont forget about your rings my friend

Even though I have 150 psi on all cylinders?

I have a theory I was thinking about. I was looking at the design of the intake and noticed the runners curve into a J-style design. When the previous turbo busted it put oil all throughout the intake and intercooler. As soon as I removed the lower IC hose oil poured out. I had to remove everything and wash it out with gas. So I'm thinking maybe there's still a puddle of oil sitting at the bottom of those runners. So I just ran some Seafoam through the intake and sprayed the oil-sprayed intake plenum with carb cleaner. It only smokes when I rev it hard, so I'll know by tonight. If not, it looks like that head's coming off.

I've only driven the car down to the corner twice since I bought it, so I need to let that engine run for a while.

you can have plenty of compression and still have a ring problem, you would have to do a leak down test to be sure and also most of the other guys are running around 170 PSI standard for your car is 178psi and min of 133psi so dont worry. just tinker around and clean odd things out to check everything, i had a bad smoke problem once to find out it was nothing more then my pvc in combination with my EGR stuck open

Well my PVC is new from Mitsu and the EGR was full of oil since it's at the bottom. I cleaned it out really good with carb cleaner. Did you replace your EGR?

a leak down test will be nessicary also instead of just compression test. my next guess would be rings too...

How do you know which size rings you need without having to send the block to a machine shop?

Also, I was looking at this head on Ebay for reference. I was wondering what those threaded studs are for. Does it have both bolts from the top and nuts from under?! I've done a few heads on other cars before but I don't remember seeing that.

Also, do the cams have to come out to get to the head bolts?

How much have you driven it since all the work? After a blown turbo the odds are it filled the converter full of oil. It takes about 5 to 10 miles to burn it all out.

I'm having the same problems. New turbo, TONS of white smoke under high boost, none at idle or anything.

Keep us updated.

I've driven it to the corner and back a couple of times. But I let it idle for a total of about 1.5 hours. The thing I do notice is the oil in the intake and on top of the pistons when I pull the plugs.

Just letting it idle does not get the cat hot enough to burn off the oil. Go out and drive it around for a for a few miles. When the turbo let loose it could have pumped oil into the intake and found some spots to puddle now that it is running again it is being sucked into the cylinders

Man I hope so and that's what I've been thinking. But I leave a good smoke show that I'm sure the neighbors don't like. It gets to the point where it's a road hazard too.

That's what keeps happening to me. When I got cut off tonight, I boosted to pass the asshole who did it and there was smoke everywhere. I was trying to take it easy on driving but I got too angry LOL.

it could also be oil in the exhaust piping. I remember when my friend blew his 60-1 on his accord, it smoked for a week after the new turbo was put in due to oil in the piping.

Go give it a kentucky tune up,

Drive it around at night 2nd gear 40-50 mph, and get that exhaust nice and hot,
if your turbo let go and you limped it home there is more than likely oil everwhere inside the intake and exhaust.

You dsm probably just needs some miles. when it smokes, does it misfire at all?

You just need some freeway on-ramps to cure your car.
