I'm going to start out by saying i'm new to dsms and I've been searching for a couple hours and haven't been able to find anything. ok so I got my car a couple weeks ago. It is a 1990 talon tsi awd it is stock except for an intake and a manual boost controller set at 14psi. I have changed the oil, transmission oil and transfer case oil and I replaced the clutch, plugs, wires, fuel filter. here is my question it won't start without putting the gas to the floor and after it starts it idles poorly. anyone have any idea of what could be causing this? thanks for the help

Sounds like you just forgot to plug something in. Check all your connections again to see if you forgot to plug something back in.

Vacuum leaks can cause erratic idles and make it difficult to start.

Timing could also be an answer BUT you'd propbably be asking a question like "Why's it making so much noise when I try to start?"
That's not always the case but my guess is vacuum from what you've posted.

Double check the transistor plug in. It is the wide verticle plug end right underneath the coil pack. It should have a retaining clip around it to hold it in place but they have been known to come unplugged. Speaking of which have you checked for spark? or spark strength?

Try starting it and let it idle for a minute. Check your exhaust for strong smell of fuel and black smoke. Then shut it down and pull your plugs. Are they wet or do they smell heavily of fuel?

If yes consider:

1) ECT sensor
2) Leaking fuel injector(s)

here's a little update. one of the plug wires some how came off of the coil so I plugged that back in it starts a little better with that on but still having problems. the plug under the coil is pluged in fine. and as for the exhaust smelling like gas after starting it it does smell of fuel but I haven't noticed any on the plugs. thanks for all the help
