grind during starting

Ok what i have in front of me is a 95 gst with a 6bolt in it. I am unsure if the car has a awd or fwd flywheel. Everytime i try to start the car it makes a loud grind noise and pauses once in a awhile. I tried changing the starter (btw is there a difference between a 1g starter and 2g starter?). The car should alrdy have a 2g starter but it was making grinding noises and then i tried using a 1g starter and it still does the same. I was thinking it was the flywheel but i really dont want to take it out until im for sure that is the problem. I was thinking the starter barely touches the flywheel and thus makes the grinding noises and hesitation but i dont even know if a starter on a fwd tranny will even touch an awd flywheel on the engine. need help!

Try removing the flywheel dust cover. It is located between the oil pan and the transmission. Should be a 10mm and 12mm bolt. You should be able to see the teeth of the flywheel. Check to see if they are grinded down at all. (metal shavings.)

If not, it may be just what you thought, the starter isn't touching the flywheel correctly.

well remember this, the AWD flywheel is smaller than the FWD flywheel by a little bit, so if the starter is for a fwd and ## running a awd flywheel then you may have some contact issues when starting. I would make sure and find out if the flywheel is fwd or awd first. Do a search, I know someone talked about the specific differences between and awd and fwd flywheel.
