Hello members, my girlfriend is looking at 91 tsi awd that is having idle issues sometimes. Idle isnt surging, however depending on time motor is idleing between 600 and 2500. I have noticed that the car is being vented to atmosphere improperly. Car has been driven around by owner like that for 70 miles. I know that idle issues would occur if vented to atmosphere w/o maft and as well as hindering performance. My question is could venting to atmosphere be doing damage to motor even if only driven for 70 mi or more. Your replies would be greatly appreciated. Owner might call this morning if still for sale so prompt replies would be great. Thanks.
 
It doesn't hurt the car, but 1G's especially don't like venting.

I can't remember seeing one 1G vented without idle/stalling problems. Tell him to recirculate it and watch the idle go back to normal. Unless there's a boost leak or other vacuum leak.
 
I just noticed that my knock sensor might not be hooked, could this cause idle issues? it's crazy because sometimes it will idle 600 rpm, then later 1500, sometime as high as 2500. the idle it goes to is so inconsistant. I am going to put that recirculating tube tomorrow on to see if this fixes it.
 
i wouldent vent it, hook it up right and and do a boost leak test, check the seals on the tb and the injecter seals. if you have a logger see what the tps is at.
 
Alright, I recirculated the bov on the car. Idle is still weird. When the car is cold it idles at like 2k. As soon as it warms up it is about 1k. Sometimes when I come to a stop it is at 500, then sometimes it will surge up and down. Then sometimes will be like 1500 rpms, what is going on? It is driving me crazy, I need to figure this out. Looking over the car, under the intake manifold there are four vacuum lines. Two are hooked up and two are not, could this be my idle problem and what should be going to those lines? All your answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
I hooked up the palm to the talon today and I was noticing that my tima at idle was like as low as -1 and as high as 3. I know base timing should be 5. Could this be my idle issue? Thanks.
 
do a boost leak test and i would try to do compression test, not sure how many miles on your car but that is what i would start off with. I did have similar problem with my 2g with 6bolt swap and boost leak had to do with little bit of it and try to adjust your idle with biss screw. Also timing is off it should affect idle too.
 
So the crack in my valve cover wouldnt contribute to low oil pressure? How about frayed oil pressure sending unit wire? Maybe an oil pressure sending unit? Also I noticed when I was driving on the freeway, the oil pressure needle wasnt stable, it was kind of bouncing only by a couple of millimeters. Thanks.

The best thing you want to do is fix the crack to see if it will fix the problem your having now. If that doesn't help you will need to looking into oil pressure sending unit and the wire to see what is going. On the side note get yourself aftermarket oil pressure gauge to get the correct reading.
 
1) I was driving on the freeway tonight and gauge was being weird on me again (oil pressure gauge) when I am driving at high speeds the needle bounces, like twitching... mainly when when I am on the freeway going 65+.
2) My car vibrates a lot inside either from the polyurethane inserts or my vrs exhaust or a combination of both. I am begining to wonder if my instrument cluster is going bad or its gone bad. My water temp was being weird to, it would be half way point then three quarter point, then a couple of seconds later back to half way point. Not twitching though like the oil pressure gauge. I tried to switch out the cluster the other night with a cluster out of a 90 talon and the rpm gauge was not working so I switched it out.
3) I did a compression test tonight and I think it was 155 all the way across or 150 all the way across. I just dont know if I did it right. I had the car cranking until the needle seemed to stabilized on the compression gauge. One thing I noticed on the compression test, on cylinder one I might have had my buddy crank it over too much, but I heard like a popping noise which sounded like it was in the cylinder, kind of like a snapple bottle cap sound but in an enclosed space. Is that bad? Please tell me that is normal.

I know it's a novel, but what do you guys think about everything I just noted? Thanks again.

I never had the oil pressure problem that your going through but i actually had high oil pressure. OEM oil pressure isn't that accurate so it's is good idea to get an aftermarket one installed.
Vibrates could really mean alot of things, so i would really get that check out. As you describe maybe your cluster is bad and you want to get a different one to see if that will fix that problem.
Doing compression test i have heard alot of different things. If you want accurate reading while your are cranking the engine you have to step on the gas to WOT position till the needle settle down [this suppose to have better result]. About that sound i'm not sure but i would be careful next time you do that.
