Well, I decided to get out of the car scene while in school and decided to purchase a dsm for a daily (good idea, huh ).

But, to the punchline. Picked up a 'decent' 1991 gs-t with pretty much all maintenance done (timing belt, alternator, gaskets, shocks, etc.). It has a 6-bolt in it with 89k miles, 3inch turbo back exhaust, kyb gr-2 with 1nch drop springs, wheels and tires. Everything else is pretty much stock (not even a boost gauge).

Issues:

1) Tranny. Seemingly the previous owner claimed he miss shifted and damaged one of the bearings in the tranny. I drove the car home (250miles actually) with the issue like that. How the sound is described is that there is a whiring (like a tranny or bearing whine almost) when the clutch is released and goes away promptly when the clutch is depressed. Not loud at all and you have to listen to hear it while in the car. I will try and get back to him as he claims the mechanic knows whats the issue. But, I still decided to come to the experts to maybe see what might be the issue.

Any ideas what it could be?? Car drove fine home with an intermittent surge while cruising while in gear.

2) Oil pressure gauge doesnt work (a little worrying actually). But, I checked the oil a few times on the way home just to make sure atleast 'some' oil was in there.

Fix: I will just get an aftermarket oil pressure gauge as from searching the forums, the stock gauge is errr trash.

If you would like to add any recommendations or ideas, go right ahead.

3) Check engine light/coolant temp sensor. Previous owner claimed that the light is due to the sensor not being installed when he did the thermostat. Funny thing however, the stock temp gauge is operational (as in it takes time to warm up/needle to move, etc.), but as far as accuracy, ha, no idea!!

Would this be a reason for the check engine light to come on?? Any ideas on whats a fix (previous owner claimed to just install the temp sensor)?? I will see if I can get the code read

4) Slight knock. Well, my previous car before developed rod knock from the big end bearings. Well, a few miles later, trying to stay off boost just to see how long it will last, the knock became quiet violent, took it apart, and the number 4 bearing fell out in 3 pieces in my face (LOL). Well, before the knock got violent, the sound the eclipse and my previous car made were/are familiar, with the exception that the knck started 10 miles into the journey and didnt get any worse over the trip (call me an idiot, thats fine), and you cannot really hear it in the car unless you pull up beside an object for the sound to bounce off, or stopped or anywhere with a clear shot at hearing the engine.

I will try and do an oil change to see how it does with new synthentic and a oil additive to see how it goes. Any ideas what this might be as well?? Rod bearings likely, huh??

Thanks, for the time and patience. I tried searching some of the issues both over here and dsmtuners (but they are down currently) and I yileded only a few useful results over here. I will continue searching however.

Thanks, Chris

The one thing I may be able to help with is this: with a 1G Eclipse you can retrieve your trouble codes with an analog ohm meter. First step is to get the repair manual from your local parts store if you don't already have one. Second: follow this link to see how to do it
http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html great thing about the 1st gens huh? don't need to go to a shop to get the ecu codes.
