I've got an oil leak coming from the back of the block near the firewall. In fact, oil is pooling on the ledge by the firewall. From looking, it doesn't seem to be coming from the head gasket, which leaves only 1 other place, right? Oil pan gasket?

I just wanted to confirm that there was no other place on the rear of the block that would allow oil to leak besides the oil pan gasket.

From what I could deduce with a flashlight last night, it seems to be coming from an area lower than the head gasket. It was hard to see for sure without taking off the intake manifold (which I don't really want to do). Am I on the right track here?

Thanks

you are kinda on the right track, but, I think the oil pan sits to low to leak on the firewall ledge. your sure its motor oil and not p/s fluid or another hydro fluid? something that is on the firewall, brakes, clutch, etc..

You could always check to make sure the bolt on the back of the block where you check to make sure the balnce shaft is in the correct position is in. I know I almost forgot to put mine back in after doing the timing belt.

Correct :thumb:

I had the same issue. There is a bolt hole on the back of the block that needs to be plugged, if it isn't you will leak/shoot oil out of the hole.

Here is a post from one of my buddy's about it:
"It's a hole that leads to the crank case, not an oil passage. So oil won't spray out under full oil pressure or anything like that. But the air that is escaping will carry oil with it, same as the valve cover vents. I haven't run balance shafts in a very long time, but I believe it is the hole for testing the rear shaft for proper phase."

Heres a pic of the bolt hole that needs to be plugged, get a copper washer for it and put some blue thread lock on it as well.
