3rd gear jolt and other random noises

car: 1990 GSX Eclipse

this only seems to happen in 3rd gear...

i'll be driving along...not particularly fast, not accelerating hard.

all of a sudden the car jolts as if something slipped, and then the CEL comes on for about 5 seconds.

then everything is perfectly normal. i cant seem to duplicate this problem, and it only happens maybe twice a month.


other noises (not sure if its related)

when i left off the throttle and let the car coast, it makes a grinding noise. the only thing I can think to compare it to is when someone spins the wheel on wheel of fortune...haha

its coming from the rear and it doesnt happen when i accelerate, only when i let it coast. the faster i go, the faster the noise is. but its not clutch dependant, meaning if i press in the clutch the noise still occurs.

**edit** i read around and found ideas about the jolt (bad fuel filter, boost leak etc.) but still nothing on my noise in particular...sound familiar to anyone?

would a bad fuel filter cause a 5 second cel to pop up?

what code is coming up?? and if you've never changed the fuel filter on the car it would be a good idea to do it anyway, it only costs about $20 from any parts store.
