I have a 90 AWD talon. My problem started with reverse, over time it got worse. I could not shift into reverse sometimes, it never grinded, just went into 4th instead. Eventually it would not go in at all. Now last night I could not go into 5th, same issue. No grinding, just goes into 3rd instead. I don't know much about Transmissions, does this sound like a linkage problem or worse? I have no trouble with 1st through 4th.

If anyone can suggest anything, I appreciate it. Thanks

I would suggest that you check proper shift cable adjustment. sounds like it is out of wack.
more side to side than front to back. Pull the consone apart to get to the shifter, you will see 2 cables one on the left (side to side) and one to the right (front to back). You will want to adjust the left one.Put the trans in neutal. Take the cotter pin out and takethe washer off then line up the hole in the cable to the pin on the shift arm. Should be directley in line with the pin. Adjust the cable so it slide on the pin easily. You should not have to move the shifter,or cable to get it back on. Front to back it the same ### only put trans in 4th to adjust.
*Note the bushing in the cable has a flat side to it plastic over the cable end other side is just the cable end(metal) plastic side goes down, on front to back it goes out , closest to the cotter pin. Hope that helps post and questions if need be.

Thanks alot crazyzx9rguy, I'll try to check it out this evening, and let you know.

Right on the money, I adjusted the left shifter cable and it shifts into reverse and 5th like a dream. Thanks man.

No problem like to help out when I can, Should shift real nice now. It made a world of difference when I did it to mine.:thumb: :thumb:

Never mind my last comment. I did what you all said to do.
Would not go into Reverse and was difficult to get into 4th. I got under the hood and found that the cables were bumping into my intake and not allowing it to move enough to get it into Reverse. I rearranged my intake piping and it worked great. THANK YOU ALL FOR POSTING HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS!! :dsm::D

I figured it out. I read on the forum that it could be a low hanging intake or something getting in the way and that was what it was. It was my intercooler piping and I moved it a little and it was fixed. Thanks everyone!!
