Can I take off transfer case and run the car 2wd for a bit. Since then noise would be either exhaust ,engine or tranny and this would eliminate rear end, transfer and axles from the mix. I figured could just tie up driveshaft under the car.

So will this work or not? And why couldn't you do this and dyno as fwd car why do guys buy that piece to make the car rwd I think?

The transmission's viscous coupler (VC) tries to maintain a constant front/rear tork ratio. With the transfer case missing, the fluid with in the VC would quickly heat up from it slipping and eventually burn up (if the car moved at all to begin with).

A VC eliminator what normally is used for AWD cars to dyno in FWD mode. It repaces the OEM VC and basically keeps constant tork to all wheels. You'd still have to drop the transfer case though for a FWD dyno.

Why not just raise the car on a lift or four jackstands and have helper bring the car up to the speed where you notice the noise? I've done this several times in my garage (helper was a broomstick :coy: ) to diagnose my own mystery noises :dsm:
