My 95 TSi has been making a couple clicking noises that are beginning to make me paranoid:barf:

First clicking noise:

While driving, not idling, there is a random clicking noise coming from the dash, seemingly from the gauge cluster. At first I thought it was the odometer, but then I noticed its random. I don't think it's the computer resetting, the ECU makes a louder click when the car shuts off. This is probably something I'm going to have to diagnose myself by taking the dash apart, but maybe this is a common thing?

It goes like this: ....click.............click...click...............click............click................click......
Like every 2-5 seconds. Not very loud.

Second clicking noise:

While braking from a slow speed, there is a clicking noise that sounds like it's coming from the driver's side of the front of the car. This clicking noise may be happening when I turn left, I'm not sure, I just noticed it last night and forgot about it until tonight.

This clicking noise is pretty rapid, but short and not very loud.

My guess is maybe CV joint or something in the brakes.

Just somebody please tell me it's probably not a sign of crankwalk!

I'd say the 2nd clicking is either your CV boot (could be leaking/busted) as has been diagnosed in a similar thread or with me, the clicking was the inner tie rod on it's way out. As for the 1st clicking I honestly have never read nor heard anything similar happening so I doubt it's very common.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I'm going to go have the car checked out tomorrow. I was going to have the wheels aligned(bad vibration and uneven tire wear), but I'll probably end up under the car if it's something I can fix and have the wheels aligned when I'm done. And this may be related to the vibration and tire wear.

Would it be possible to use the axles from my 1G ES as a temporary fix? Just a thought.

Oh yeah, and I have to go to the junkyard tomorrow anyhow for parts for my 1g, so if my cv joint is bad maybe I'll just pick up a whole used axle.

Arrow_Runner,

In regards to the first click I had a similar one, it turned out to be the odometer "miles traveled reader thing", (not the one that says your actual car mileage but the one below it). While driving, I noticed it got stuck trying to turn up to the next number and therefore it clicked every couple of seconds. I pushed down the reader reseter (i don't know the actual name, but it's the black stick that sticks out the gauge cluster) and the click was gone. OMG

Hope this helps! :rocks:

Nothing on but the engine.

The odometer was my first guess, but it's still working properly so it's probably going to keep clicking until I can take the dash apart.

Thanks guys.

Update:

The clicking coming from the console actually happens whenever I slightly move the steering wheel in the opposite direction than the last movement. This is especially noticable whenever I'm on a slower semi-straight road like the path I've been taking to work lately. It's not as annoying now that I know when to expect it, but I still would like to atleast know what is causing it, and at best, fix it.

The clicking noise coming from the front actually sounds more like a creaking noise than clicking. And I inspected my CV boot and it looks perfect.

Any ideas?
