Ive read and read until I'm just confused. I have a 98 Gsx that I just modded with a 60 trim and all the goodies. I'm not worried about crank walk if I rebuild cause I know it will be a while before it goes again or I mean walks again. The side of thrust bearing is in the pan so Could this motor be rebuilt or junk it. The problem I have is when I bought it my credit union offered extended insurance and it covers crank walk. I don't know if the shop doing the work will put a 6 bolt in it also. What ever I use I will put the good rods and pistons in it. Some one said in another thread that CW is due to bad machining, If thats true whats the trick to machining a good 7 bolt. And I want an 11 second car. I'm 50 and the younger people in my town cant wait for me to get this thing done. You can see my mods in my profile. Aside from CW will my parts make me a faster 7 bolt then on a 6 bolt.
Hell, I'm going to die before I put another 50 thousand on this LOL. I only drove it on Saturday nights.

There are plenty of threads on correctly machining a 7 bolt, just search. However, I highly believe in running one til it walks/dies and then switching to a 6 bolt. From what i have seen, a crankwalked motor will most likely walk again shortly after rebuild.

We also race an asphalt stock car and want to have our engine builder there do this engine. Yes I can take it any place I want and its all covered but I will have to pay for eagle rods and forged pistons. It has to be done by a certified mechanic. I have it all torn apart and engine builder said don't tell insurance that I tore it apart. I didn't do a search on machining a 7 bolt but will. This guy is good so I want him to do it weather this is rebuilt or he has to get a short block and rebuild it. Maybe I can have him get the new rebuilt in with a 6 bolt and I can finish it up as I don't think he wants the little hassles of changing it to a 6 bolt. If block is OK I think he will say He has to just rebuild it. Can a 7 bolt with the same mods be faster? I'm going to search for machining now. thanks, The old man.

All I have to do is pay 50 bucks and for any extras like the rods and pistons.

I would contact one of the reputable engine builders that are familiar with machining 7 bolt cranks. Going to the local machine shop probably won't cut it. There are other techniques, that engine builders use to lessen the chance of crankwalk, when they assembly the engine.

Who's your machinst in CR? I was a mechanic on a few IMCA modifed and late model cars at Vinton.

You can look up crankwalk till your eyes fall out. Get another crank and block do not use the old one!!!!!!!!! Look for a 97-99 7 bolt block. On the side of the block by the starter Is the vin #. Get the vin go to car fax enter the # it will tell you the year with out paying. 95-96 is one piece on the 97-99 It is two. Also check your stepping height on your clutch!!! This is a big problem some people make there ck when they up grade there flywheel or clutch. I have a 7 bolt making 600hp with on crankwalk. I have other broken parts drive line.

Thanks for all the info, Sperry Does our engines and knows how to do fly wheel step. I asked him before he started on the fly wheel.
The car seemed to run fine. But sometimes the clutch would engage at different spots. I tore it apart to put studs and a good head gasket and got the bs kit and when I was cleaning the oil pan I saw the side of thrust bearing all chewed up in the pan. I did hear some bad noises and thought it might be the 2600 new clutch making the noise but bet it was the 2600 finishing of the trust bearing.

Edit. No one has said If the same mods would make a 7 bolt or 6 bolt faster.

The 6 and 7 bolts make pretty much the same horsepower with similar mods. The difference is the bigger 6 bolt rods which can handle more than your 2g rods and the higher compression in the 2g. 1g head has slightly bigger ports and the cams are known to be slightly more aggressive.

I have to call Sperry again Monday to see if I can get the car to him. He is always real busy. I found out some guys from Chicago take there blocks to him. Anyway I will let you all know what he says to do and what we do do then will post here how it runs after.
edit, If he has a torque plate for line boring witch I bet he does i think I will stick with the 7 bolt and put eagle rods and forged pistons in it.
I also forgot to say sperry is a race engine builder not your behind the counter machine shop and he has an engine dyno also. When I go in the back he has drag boat blower and drag car engines waiting for rebiulds. He does more racing engines then stock. Also has a head flow room but said he is not set up for a DSM head yet. But thats in the near future.
