Well i checked the timing, replaced the spark plugs (.028 gap), checked for vacume leaks and tightened the bolts by the 02 housing/downpipe. On a side note, it seems like the car is running really rich, when i took out the old plugs, they were black. I still have a horrible idle!! It isnt smooth at all and it is wanders from 500-800. Now it dies sometimes too....can someone offer any other advice? Im ready to take it to satan! The thing idled perfect before the timing belt/waterpump/headgasket were changed...now it sucks!

Are you sure every single vacuum line is hooked up from when you did the headgasket job and took the head off?

When you took the head off, did you seperate the throttle body from the intake manifold and the intake manifold from the head of the motor? Bad gaskets between the throttle body or intake manifold will cause leaks.

Try toying with the BISS screw if you can't find any leaks at all. When my idle surged it was because my BISS screw was bad. At first I just adjusted it and it stopped, but it would start again. Came to find out the O-ring went bad, which lets the screw somewhat loosen itself causing surge.

Before you take it to the dealership, you might want to spend 10 or 15$ if you have access to a compressor and make yourself a homemade boost leak tester. Also, I took my ISC out and tested mine the first time I had idle surge. When you rotate the end of it, it should go half way in each direction and stop. Mine would go halfway, then click, and keep going.

Just a few ideas on what it could be. Good luck with fixing it.
